Dropzone Commander is extremely fun (cinematic in the way I often feel 40k should be). Armored engagements cover infantry with objectives while fast movers screech into and off of the battlefield with terrifying speed. The game is a quick paced I-go U-go system and is an absolute blast.

It is also extremely balanced with very few easy choices. For instance I am currently working on a United Colony of Mankind force that currently sits at 1160 points and attempting to bring it up to 1500 (the point scale being comparable to 40k). So far I have an even mix of anti-tank, anti-aircraft, and objective grabbing infantry in my list. I want to add a unit of the new fireblade (flamethrower tank unit to burn enemy infantry out of key buildings), but also want a unit of rapiers (anti-aircraft tanks) and gladius (heavy anti-tank tanks). I can however only fit in two. The game favors armies that attempt to balance rather than those that spam.

Price-wise the game is a little on the expensive end, but there are ways to lower the price of entry. The two player starter set is an extremely good deal for instance. For $95 (cheaper if you go some place like the warstore) you get a UCM plastic starter force, a Scourge plastic starter force, a full rulebook, dice, tape measure, fold out city map, and easy to build cardstock buildings. Also the Hawk Wargames Ruinscape and Cityscape battlefield boxes are amazing deals. For roughly $60 you all the battlefield you could ever want with a ton of easy to assemble cardstock buildings and modular ground tiles.

I've just gotten into it and my first games were every bit as interesting and exciting as I thought they would be from checking out videos and battle reports.

The activation system keeps you involved in the game all the time and is a layer of tactics in itself.

The game background is well done in my opinion and it's drawn me into the game world as I play.

There's plenty of fun to be had in list design. So far, the balance seems pretty good overall. Each faction has their advantages. I find it a much cheaper alternative to 40K.

Cheers,
Sword

A Drop Zone Commander fan.
