For some reason I'm not confident about this. If an army (of any size) can take an ally, effectively granting the extra (smaller) FOC... can it ally with itself, essentially gaining the extra FOC without going outside it's own dex?

Thanks,
Gits

how are any codexes allowed to ally with themselves?

you automatically lose points for using the trite gamer-isms: balanced, meta, Mat Ward, etc.

Good question. And maybe that's the problem. For example: the only ork battle-brother ally is other orks. I'm assuming based on that fact... that it is implicit orks can then ally with themselves.

'Allied Detachments', page 109 of the rulebook. Note that this is modified by one codex and several codex supplements.

I am still trying to find where Orks are battle-brothers with anything. and the only codex allowed to ally with itself is Space Marines. The supplements are effectively separate books.

Orks have a Battle-Brother in one of the Forgeworld army lists (the one with Dread Mobs I think, can't remember what it's called).

Supplements need a specific rule in order to ally with their parent Codex (which Iyanden, the first Supplement, lacks).

Its called Dread Mob

Codex: Orks and Dread Mob Battle Brothers, and the only Battle Brothers Orks can have. You cannot ally with the same Codex (exceptions apply as always).
