I recently particapated in a casual tournament at my FLGS. I was watching another match of a fellow Tau player and I noticed that his Farsight bomb included missle drones. I pointed out to him that I didn't think that was legal (we are both relatively new players). He said the codex said he could select from the drone list and missle drones were in the list. I spent some time looking through the codex and couldn't find any exceptions. I later read that it was an FAQ. Given the GW website switch, the FAQ wasn't readily available. It didn't end up mattering in his match. But I just kinda feel like a jerk now for bringing it up. The other player is a really nice guy (I know he wasn't trying to cheat) and I think he may have been put off by me pointing it out. I just wanted to make sure that he didn't have any issues down the road with other players.
Is there some other way I should have handled this?

Personally, I'm pretty hesitant to say anything to anyone in a game unless I know them. Short of them asking, or otherwise engaged in a loud, heated argument, I'd probably just not say anything.

Eh, I think you were fine. Unless the judge of the tournament is checking every list for legality, it's up to the tournament participants to enforce it.
I also doubt the player was intentionally cheating.

I'd also add that I doubly wouldn't say anything unless I have the relevant information/rules ready on hand to show them.

I don't think you should feel bad about it, you didn't get mad and accuse him of cheating, you raised a valid question.

That's why I tend to bring all of the latest FAQs with me.
Well, Army FAQs anyway. The BrB FAQ is a bit bulky.

There's nothing wrong in asking for clarification in this game - its highly complex and that's before you get into each army having its own mini-rule book of stuff. Asking for clarification is 100% normal and expected.
Within the context you thought you saw an error and you asked for confirmation - a check of the codex proved that there was no problem and the game continues as normal.
The FAQ element for a tournament only applies if they are using them ;and my view is that if they want them used they should specifically mention it before the tournament and (like all other rules materials) there should be access to the FAQ's at the event (either players have to bring it or the organiser has at least 1 master copy of each FAQ).
Since it sounds like the FAQ's weren't in use its a null issue since the player was under no obligation to make use of it.
No rule was broken and nothing accused.

Wait, is that true? The FAQ are not new rules... they are literally clarifications on the rules. How could a tournament choose NOT to use them?

You handled it ok. How else are you going to learn if you don't make mistakes right? If anything, all you could have said was "Thank you, I learnt something new today" so this way it would seem he has taught you something.
Doesn't mean he was right, but it breaks a situation where it could come out worse.

Tournaments can choose to follow any thing they want.
They can use house rules - follow FAQ or not etc... They are not held to any central standard nor rules set. Heck you can hold the whole thing in 1st edition if you want.

Right, but how would they even advertise that?
"6th Edition but not all the rules?" The FAQ are not new rules, they just explain things GW forgot or didn't make clear in the books.
It'd basically be closing their eyes and pretending clarifications didn't exist. It seems like it'd foster an environment using loopholes that don't ACTUALLY exist but everyone is pretending they do.
I'd also expect an astounding number of D6 roll-offs for rules disputes.

Well most small tournaments are groups or clubs playing so they just tell each other what the rules are before the event. They are the most likely to use house rules (which they are likely using in regular matches anyway) and to ignore or accept additions to the rules.
Major tournaments are more likely to use FAQ's as standard - but again information on that is easily given out through websites (the same way people find out about the tournament to attend it in the first place).
They are laws unto themselves; they are free to do what they want. There is no ruling nor official that stands over them to enforce any kind of national or international standard.
