My buddy played against Tau yesterday and he said it was taking a 2++ saves all game. I know I'll have a go at this guy at some time and in the Tau codex the best I saw was a 3++ from Nova reactor. As I don't own the codex but I do have access I just wanted to know if it's possible. Thank you.

it has a 2+ armor save, Maybe you or your buddy was mistaking that for 2++

That's hard to say if my friend mixed it up. Is it safe to say though that 3++ is the best it's getting?

I cannot think of any shenanigans that could improve it past a 3++, aside from Fortune for a re-rollable 3++.

Cover in Ruins - 4+
Stealth/Shrouded - +1/+2
Going to Ground - +1

So yes, the Riptide could potentially get a 2+ cover save if in Ruins, has either Stealth or Shrouded, and opts to Go to Ground (as it is not Fearless)

Nothing on page 48 nor on page 18 says they can't.
Perhaps you're confusing Fearless?

I may have missed something, but the only limitation for GtG is being fearless. Most MCs are fearless, except the Riptide.

And the Nemesis Dreadknight, who while Knowing No Fear, is not Fearless.

Bikes and jetbikes can also not go to ground or get pinned.
There is no way a Riptide can get a 2++ save. 2+ cover, sure, but that isn't the same.

Monstrous Creatures are Fearless by default last I recall.
EDIT: I stand corrected, that is not the case, I was likely mixing things up in my head. Nothing keeps MCs from Going to Ground as far as I can see.

Nope, not in 6th.
Riptides can go to ground, fall back, get pinned, etc. That's why you never give them drones because loosing a single one can cause it to fall back.

And yet I see people advocating giving them Drones so they can pair the Riptide with Shadowsun, or a Farseer.

You don't give them drones unless you are trying to maximize damage from the Firebase Cadre, or you are attaching ICs to it and you want to keep T6.

Shadowsun and a Farseer can already join them without drones. The rules is models that always consist of only one model cannot be joined by IC's. A riptide can take drones, or not, so isn't always a single model.

The reason people advocate drones if you're going to be attaching ICs is because of Majority Toughness.

A Riptide that's being wounded at T4 lives about as long as 5 Terminators. IE - not very long.

You don't need them, but if you don't balance the majority toughness, you can remove part of the Riptide's strength. Since you are already throwing in more models with higher leadership, there is limited downside to adding the drones.

If a riptide can get a 3++ from a nova reactor, then can't a riptide get a 2++ from a nova reactor and a sky shield?

No, because that would result in a riptide with a 4++ and a 3++. The nova reactor doesn't give it a bonus to any invulnerable save, just the innate one it comes with.

Neither are modifying invul, they just give you said save

I know that there were no sky shields in game in question.

I thought MCs could not be pinned, and as such could not gtg.

MCs can be pinned, and units that cannot be pinned can still voluntarily GtG.

My best guess was the player was getting confused with protect for warlocks.

I had an entire 12 man crew at my FLGS all searching their books and memories when I pinned a Riptide. Seems that's a really common misconception.
