Adolescent Youth on Ultramar
|
Hey guys, so I've started kind of getting into warhammer 40k again. I used to collect and paint when I was younger but never really played because I wasn't that interested and it seemed to complicated. But now I finally decided I wanted to get back into it and actually learn how to play this time, so I found my old space marines and now I concerned with crafting an actually playable army. Basically what I have now are a space marine bike squad, a Space marine commander, 3 space marines with jump packs, and finally the battle for macragge pack (which includes 10 Space Marines, 1 Imperial Pilot, and a bunch of Tryanids which I'm not concerned with right now),
So my question is can anyone provide a little insight into what else I might need to make a playable army?
thanks

Welcome to dakka, and welcome back to the hobby
You could start with the Codex for space marines. You'll need it eventually, and it will help you decide where you want to go in terms of your army and ultimately help you decide what you should buy next.
Plus, you cant really go wrong with picking up a Tactical squad, rhino/razorback or scouts.

Yea I'm actually looking at buying my codex now haha
I guess my other question would be then should I just read through the entire codex or are there specific areas I should just focus on. And my other question is, are there any places I can find cheaper codex or a used one?

As was already said if you're going for a standard Marine army, you'll want some Tactical Squads as they are probably the most frequently used troops choice from that Codex. Rhino's are also frequently used. I'd say read through the book before you start picking up a lot of other models, because you'll want to get an idea of the type of army you want to play (lots of fast attack, or lots of heavy support, elites, etc. or perhaps a more balanced force with some of each). There's plenty of fluff in there too, so if you enjoy the background and story of the game, you can get a feel from that about what type of force you'd like to play.
You can also post in the 40K forums (like general discussion) for more details and ideas.
And my other question is, are there any places I can find cheaper codex or a used one?
There are a few online retailers/mail order stores that sell GW (and other gaming products) at a discount. I've had plenty of good luck with www.thewarstore.com.

Hey friend welcome to Dakka!
As I am in a similar boat to you perhaps I could provide some newly gained wisdom.
Rhino's are a great addition to a new army. Mobility is the name of the game especially with regards to objective missions. You can find some great deals on Rhino's around the internet and I would DEFINATELY recommend them.
Try to stick to the rule of thumb 1 Troop Choice per 500 points. This helps ensure you have enough bodies on the field, and a chance to capture objectives.
Also Heavy Support a super important choice to make. Do you want mobility, fire power, stickiness? It all depends on the type of list you're trying to make. I chose Devestators for my DA because I needed bodies and heavy AV support, but if you have alot of bodies a predator is probably the best bet! Having a diversified list of toughness and AV is always best so think about some AV mobility.
As for elites terminators are great but also very context dependent. I roll DA so my terminators are fantastic regardless, but if you need close combat support SS/TH terminators are extra fantastic!
If you like the feel of your bike squads massing bikes can be effective especially if you pick up an assault bike. But always remember: build for all comers.
Welcome to the game friend!

Blood Angel Terminator with Lightning Claws

Ok, these guys covered it perfectly, do you have a local shop to play? I'd just run small unit actions, commander, 2 tac squads while you get things figured out. I like armor, flying transports, drop pods. I play Blood Angels because I like the idea of a unit that drops in and generally likes close combat. So figure out the style of play you like, what's cool to you after you get the basics together and painted. While you're figuring it out pick out a chapter and paint your basic units. That was you have everything painted once it's collected.
What chapter have you picked? I ask this because there are different tactics for the chapters.
