I've just started working on one of the awesome Forge World Praetor sculpts. Since they just released Horus I thought I'd paint this guy in the Sons of Horus color scheme. It'll be good practice for when the Warmaster finally arrives. Not a whole lot done so far, just a few hours of painting the last two nights.

I'm working on the head separately, it's hard to paint around that neck armor. I still need to finish the implants and service studs before I'm ready to permanently attach it to the body. I've left the arms off as well so I have easier access to some of the details on the main body.

I hope you like where I'm headed with this figure. I'll post more updates as he gets further along.

Looks great so far, how do you do your gold?

I have that model still sitting in a blister from last year, too little time :(

Also did you ever finish that Scourge? I'd love to see the final shot.

Looks like some washes over runelord brass.

Thanks! For the gold I started with Reaper's Old Bronze color and mixed in a lot of flat black. You can see on the feathers it gets very dull and dark. From there I worked in several layers up to pure Old Bronze to create my highlights. From there I took some Vallejo Model Air gold and started mixing it into the old bronze for some top highlights. Pure VMA gold for some edges and bolts. After all that you can go back over it with washes to strengthen the shadows, though I haven't done that yet on this figure.

For the black and bronze you can get away with just about any paint brand. However, VMA gold is pretty unique. As a gold color it's a very weird shade. But as a gold/bronze highlight it is awesome. Since it's designed for the airbrush it flows so smoothly off the brush too. VMA also makes some nice white metallic colors.

I posted a tutorial on another figure over at WAMP. About halfway down I discuss the armor. It's got some more detail and pictures of the various stages.

Nope, the scourge is still sitting on my workbench. I've attached the other arm and gun, but haven't worked up enough motivation to paint all those feathers on the wings!

Wonderful start, this I will be following with interest.

I have a little hobby-thread going in the P&M section. Some say it's the best blog on Dakka, some don't agree, most belive it would be better if I finished at least one project some time this century and not just kept starting new ones.
Check it out, you just might like it.

Updated the face with the service stud and bionics

And I'm still working on the armor. I got far enough along to add the first arm though.

He sure is grumpy! Haha. Seriously, looks phenomenal though. Easily a competition-level paint job in the making!

I'm making some more progress on the armor

I'm experimenting with a new mix for black. I wanted to do more of a blue-black but I took a bit of inspiration from the regular Sons of Medusa color scheme and went with more of a verdigris green as my blue substitute. At maybe 3 parts black to 1 part blue-green I switch over to a skin color and started mixing that in to create the highlights. In both cases I stayed away from pure blue-green and skin, each mix had a lot of black or black/blue-green in it.

Thanks, Bebop. That sea ogre is looking really neat.

Yeah, I tend to just post my warhammer work here and since a lot of my figures are historical I'm not too active on dakka dakka. I just assumed there wouldn't be much interest in those figures... but I guess there is a historical gaming section on the forum. Maybe I should start up an official everything-I-do style WIP thread over here and see how it goes. In the meantime, here's my CMON thread for anyone interested: http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/showthread.php?51026-Bailey03-s-WIP/page23

Mate that is a beautifully painted bare head! I am a fan of that model and you are doing an excellent job (which is usual for you I see!!) it's always great to welcome another painter who isn't afraid to answer questions and help out! I'll be certainly reading your blog and following what you do in an attempt to lift my own work up to a better level, if bebop is anything to go by he's gone from a good painter to a DAMN good painter rather quickly I may add and it now seems you had something to do with that!

Thanks, nerdfest!

So I'm continuing on with the Praetor's armor. Overall I'm really happy with how the black has turned out. The red leather strips still need a lot of work, but I think seeing that little bit of color there helps.

Oh, and in addition to my WIP thread I've started up an official blog. It's a nice way to keep all of my projects, tutorials, and other posts in one place. You'll see a lot of the same pictures, but hopefully the descriptions will go into more detail. You can also check out the tutorials section

Truly phenomenal work, the skin is especially life like, just really excellent. I really like the dark red on the tassels on the armour, a very nice shade you've achieved there.
