Hey guys, so I was going to get into some Orks lately and I need some help. I'm trying to save some money here, but am going to run what I call a "Green Tide" list. This consists of 100 boyz, 45 lootas, 9 Big Gunz (Kannon), and a Big Mek. If I were to buy all of this stuff form GW I would be running up a pretty darn large bill! So can anyone help me find some good proxys or counts-as so I can save some money? Being that its Orks for goodness sake I don't think that it will be that hard because I can always take some Ork bits and just put them on stuff, but I need to find some similar pieces so I can model them. Thanks!

i used ion cannons from the hammer head kit which are pretty cheap. Wheels from a trukk. go on ebay and find a bitz lot. should help tremendously. lootas would look cool with any cheap gunz you can find from any army.

Stikk bommas are special among ork society for one reason - They know when you pull the pin out of a stikk bomb you throw the bomb not the pin!

Kannons are the kind of thing you can make easily out of plasticard sheets, tubing, and whatever other accessory bits you can scrape together. I guess you'll still need crew, but cheap sources for Goblins are all over the place.

In my gallery you can see the kannons and lobbas I scratch built, it's easy

You could probably use the orks that mantic uses, they are a lot cheaper. But other than that, just build what you need, its plenty easy, go to a dollar store and then the hardware store for some pvc tube, you can get like 8 feet for 3 bucks, and dollar store randoms for wheels and what nots. Build the mek the same way, just add sciencey things from a 50s movie and presto

How about this?

Just replace the Dorfs with Orks.

Lobbas are dead easy to make from oil drums and various bits. You can easily angle them down to make Kannons

A VERY good source for free plastic tube (if you work in retail) is the centre of the receipt rolls. These just get thrown in the bin usually and are incredibly useful.

I got some suggestions for ya mate:

1) Ebay is your friend if you want cheap and chearful units. Just bare in mind that you might have to repaint the models if they are not up to your liking.
2) Many scratch builds (such as Grimtuff's) are always good for orks. Just buy a couple of trukks and spare out the spare bits and you're good to go
3) don't be scared to go outside of the GW range (unless you are a tournament player). In any case try out plasticard and tubing for really cheap armour plates and kannons/pipes/smoke stacks. Since you are dealing with orks you don't have to worry about quality of the cut/build, which is helpful for first time scratch builders.
4) Whatever you do, KEEP THE BITZ. You never know what project you will do next and it will be a good to have something to start it off.

Hope that helps ya mate

Thank you everyone for the responses! I really appreciate it, and I will look forward to checking out some sites and the Gallery.

On a slightly separate note, I do play Tau, so I would bring that to Tournaments almost every time, but would some people (and tournament organizers) possibly have a problem with all of this ork "cheese" if most of my army is heavily modded?
I mean it is Orks sooo, I'm not sure how much problem they could have! All of their models look like junk stuck together.

Keep in mind that Ork models aren't just "junk stuck together". They should at least look like they could work, but no one will have a problem if they look heavily converted as long as they aren't too big for their bases.

Having played Tau you should have a lot of electric bits and "kno-wots" in your bits box, and you should be able to use those to make some nice lootas and a Big Mek. Ebay is your friend, you can get tons of boys off of it for cheap, and if you get a regular box of GW lootas & burnas you can double the output with some extra bodies and legs and then cutting off the actual burna parts and putting on some shootas or zappy guns.

This blog has some VERY nice lootas: http://musingsofasmurf.blogspot.com/2011/01/what-do-you-say-to-couple-more-ork.html

And here are some from MrMerlin here on dakka:

Very true. I was able to inherit a TON of Orks from a couple of old friends who are just done with 40K. I have all the Boyz I need and I do indeed have quite a bit of Tau bits. Thanks for posting the pictures of the modded Lootas, looks great!

So I am going to be using 18 Grot Tanks in my Dreadmob army. Due to the fact that I am using so many, I was wondering if anyone could find something of very similar size that I could mod with Orky bits.
Here are the FW models: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Orks/ORK_VEHICLES/GROT-TANKS.html
Being that they are just small tanks, it shouldn't be too hard, but I still need help finding an initial model to mod off of. Thanks!

1/72 ww2 tanks seem about the right size for grot tanks. i know someone who was thinking about using a bunch of tiger tank models to do his grot tank's.

So I was looking around and couldn't find much that looks like the Grot Tanks. Could someone post links? I am really looking for something that would save me money, if it's more than the real deal, please don't post anything. Btw, I need 18 of them, and the ones from FW come in fours
