Combat Squad-ing is done post army list write-up.

Can you add wargear after the game starts?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

You can put 5 of them in the pod and five on the ground, or all 10 in the pod, or (I think) drop the pod empty with all 10 of them on the ground. Just throwin' that out there.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, if you do put all 10 in the pod, you can have them combat squad when they get out, as well (have to declare that during deployment though).

Not true. You decide prior to Warlord traits (if using SM) or before deployment (everyone else).

Well, half right... You can have all ten in the pod, and they can be combat squadded... It's just the timing of it that was wrong. Last edition they split when they landed. This edition they split when you declare them in reserve at the start of the game.

You could also have all 10 of them in a Rhino or Land Raider variant and combat squaded(again though the squading is done pre Warlord traits)

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Dont have the dex but why not buy 2x5 man squads and drop pod them both. I can do that with my DA and still get a special weapon and a heavy weapon.

There could be many reason, the primary being that most units gain additional access to special or Heavy weapons as it is often 1 per every 5 men. Another reason I can think of is additional war-gear which benefits the unit as a whole should one man carry it. I know I prefer 10 men squad of Noise Marines, because it is cheaper then two 5 men squads to field the same number of Blast Masters and the feel no pain bonus. I would also advise re-reading the Codex you are using and confirm, I can't say for sure for a Dark Angle army but most are usually 1 per 5 men.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Jinx left out one more reason, but it's normally not a concern: if you have maxed out your troop choices and want more.

That said, I'm not sure I've ever seen a marine player that took 6 full troop units.

1) Cost per 5-man unit + pod.
2) Tactical Flexability: In a tourney, You will see a Purge the Alien Scenario and 2+ Objective based scenarios, 3 10-man tactical squads are 6 scoring units for objective games and then only 3(harder to wipe) units for unit kill games.
3) Ability to bring more than 6 Troops units to a game(you can have up to 12 5-man squads with combat squading)
4) Double units podding in.
