I haven't played 40K for a long time, probably been about 8 years now.
Never played with my guard either so I'm looking for some assistance.
I want to make a solid 1000pt list that's well rounded.

I will need to add to my forces as I have:

1 Company Command Squad (the old metal one)
1 Platoon Command Squad
3 Squads of Shock Troops
Heavy Weapons Team (Mortars)
1 Veteran Squad
1 Special Weapons Team
1 Chimera

I want to get two more squads of veterans and I want to get more heavy weapons (autocannons),
Definitely want a russ but I can see that this is heavily bias towards infantry and I don't want to spend too much on a load of tanks.
Would be willing to go higher towards 1500 but for now, on my budget I want a good 1000pts.

One of the big things you are going to need to worry about with running a bunch of veterans is that you have to be able to get them around the field and to different objectives. I would look into adding Chimeras or even the new Taurox for the vet squads to get them places faster.

The taurox isnt as bad as people are letting on, sure it is only front armor 11 but it gets to re-roll its failed immobilization checks and puts out some good shooting!
