A little 600 point bash set during the British advance towards Germany, using BGO. The British are pushing through a town, and a small Fallschirmjager Kampfgruppe is thrown out to meet them...

The British got to choose sides in this game and came on through the town, leaving the poor foot slogging FJ to come on via the more open ground. At first this looked likely to be a walk over as the Germans were outnumbered 2 - 1 in infantry and the British Churchills in support, plus copius 4.2" mortars in support, it looked nasty from the start...

But with the British advance stalling early on thanks to a series of poor reinforcement rolls the Germans rushed onto the table and went full steam ahead to reach the town. This had two effects. The first was to leave the British pre-registered target points behind them, saving on harassing mortar fire, and thanks to the German target point screening the centre of the town, the first FJ recce patrol made it into the key building on the road corner beside the town square. Sadly for the British their only Forward Observer had raced forward in his jeep only for it to suffer a direct hit from a 120mm mortar shell...

This unit of FJ, armed with FG42s, was able to stall the piecemeal British advance long enough for the rest of the platoon to arrive en-masse and they took position in the line of townhouses, all ready to ambush any British units that tried to advance. The British supporting armour tried to outflank them, but lost their first tank to a long range round from the PaK43, and then both their other tanks to the StuGs supporting the Fallschirmjager.

The British then had to try and fight their way into the town against the FJ now safely inside buildings. As British units moved forward they came under intense fire from German units in ambush. Very quickly each attack that was tried took losses and became pinned down. Three valiant attempts were launched but all suffered the same fate... While the FJ seem to lead charmed lives.

Even a passing Typhoon was ineffective as it loosed off its rockets at the advancing StuGs... All missed their mark. The British tried to finally out flank the German position with their last two intact infantry sections, but a FJ sMG42, hidden for most of the game stopped that followed by a salvo from the German mortars. Eventually the british threw in the towel as their infantry casualties had mounted so much they were finally unable to organise any major attack with the weakened units. With quite light casualties, the FJ were in far better strength and as the British withdrew, they claimed victory...

Love the terrain. Some questions:

Is the overall table surface textured and flocked, or is it a drop cloth with some flock bits stuck in it here and there?

The hedges, are they just clump foliage from a model railroad shop?

Any chance I could get a closer picture of the train tracks? Are they a bunch of separate pieces or is this an integrated terrain table?

The buildings? Resin or other cast materials with printed window inserts?

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

The table base is a green Mat-o-War mat, superb product, indestructible.

Hedges are clump foliage and lichen mixed.

Train tracks are the FoW ones.

The buildings are paper and foamboard...

I think the buildings are built out of other materials and paper pieces are inserts inside windows, doors, etc.,. I could be wrong though.
