This pertains to sergeants.

5th Edition's Space Marine Codex had it where you could have a sergeant kitted out with a Bolt Pistol and a Power fist (given that you pay for it of course).

I'm just noticing now after actually bothering to read the current 6th ed Space Marine Codex, that this does not seem possible any more. The wording says you can replace a 'bolt pistol and/or melee weapon' for a Power Fist... it does not say you can switch out the 'boltgun' for a Power Fist.

Am I missing something? or does it indeed indicate no equipping a Bolt Pistol with a Power Fist on a sergeant at the same time?

Yes, you swap his boltgun for a chainsword, then swap that chainsword for a power fist. The Space Marine Codex FAQ established that it does in fact work this way (bikers were given the option of replacing their bolt pistol with a chainsword, because this then enabled them to legally take special weapons by re-swapping the chainsword).

You most certainly can, the real question is, why?

A boltgun is so much better than a bolt pistol. You'll never be doing the charging with Tacs, so two shots on overwatch is so much more useful - remembering that a P.fizzle is a specialist weapon and thus, doesn't get +1 attack when comboed with a bolt pistol.

I disagree with the notion that your tacs will never be charging (although I DO agree that the boltgun is the better choice for a ranged weapon).

You're quite right, that sometimes they will charge. But I'd rather have the boltguns for the 1/10 situation where they get charged, rather than the 1/20 situations where they do charge.

If you're wondering, the other 17/20 situations is when it doesn't matter because your opponent doesn't assault and you never close to assault range the whole game.

Bolter, Combi-bolter, or Storm Bolter with charging.

First let me reitterate that the Bolter can certainly be changed to a Chainsword then changed to a powerfist(or more importantly a Power weapon).

Second, For a tac Squad Sgt with a Power fist, you want that unit in the thick, the Power fist is too expensive not to try for at least 2 combats. Then we get into the paired guns, Combi and Storm Bolters are more expensive but depending on Combitype you will have an assault weapon before the charge. For the Bolter and Plasma Portion, you just forgo shooting with that 1 model on the way in to assault, you more than make up for those 2 shots(or the 1 pistol shot you would have gotten) with the bonus attacks especially since the rest of your unit is making pistol attacks.

You could always have that one model be the one throwing a grenade.

This answers my question. I figured that swapping the boltgun for a chainsword had something to do with how to get other melee weapons for your sergeant but wasn't sure. I should have checked the FAQ before posting. Thanks
