Going to a 998 point tournament with the special rule that you cannot have more than one unit of the same type on the field (even troop transports) and no allied detachments. I normally run a Nurgle-themed army, and my list so far is:
Chaos Lord - 175
bike, MoN, lightning claw, power fist, Sigil of Corruption, Gift of Mutation
Chaos Spawn - 180
5 x spawn, MoN
Chaos Marines - 231
10 x marines, 2 x meltas, MoN
Champ w/ gift of mutation and lightning claw
Plague Marines - 258
7 x marines, 2 x plasmas
Rhino w/ combi-melta
champ w/ lightning claw and gift of mutation
Obliterators - 158
2 x Oblits, MoN, Veterans
Total - 997
Any and all advice is appreciated!

Your plague marines should be cheaper, I think.
I would drop the special weapons from the champs. Plague champs have a badass knife, so unless you plan on hunting something really nasty it will do over the fist(and striking last makes you dead anyways). A claw is OK on the normal marine champ, but maybe just a regular power weapon for extra swings in combat, or no weapon at all?
A 5th spawn would be a good buy with spare points. Also consider blight grenades, they are dirt cheap and very effective.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

Good eye on the plague marines. Should be 258. Will edit original post.
I'm running the power fist on the biker lord because I know at least four lists will have MCs ( you, Riptides) and I don't really have an effective means of dealing with them other than a power fist. That, and both lightning claws and power fists are specialist weapons while all other power weapons are not.
I'm uncomfortable running the plague champ without a power fist but I can see what you're getting at. If they're in melee I have bigger problems than can be solved with one power fist, I guess. The plague knife has no AP, though, and I want my champs to feel powerful.

By champs I did not mean the lord. The lord has a great setup, as you can cut down hordes with the claw, or smash face with the fist as needed.
The plague knife is fairly strong, as you get re rolls to wound against T4 or less. Sure, it lacks ap but you are correct, when your marines are in CC you do have big problems. The fist goes last in a challenge, but has a better chance to kill, while the knife goes first and is effective against a variety of targets.Against an MC or hordes, your knives will do serious work, only TEQ will give you major issues, so unless you expect that I would stick to knives. Maybe a combi plasma for more plasma dakka goodness.

I would split the oblitorators up myself.. not much else you can do at 1k.. for objectives, id want a min unit of cultists. I would want dirge casters on the rhino to stop tau overwatch shenanigans. Trimming 50 points shouldn't be that hard. When I say trimming, I mean taking away everything that is nice, but isn't quite worth the points you pay for it.
Mark of nurgle on the marines, the champions lightning claw(consider a smaller unit with a combimelta , veterans on the oblits (if running solo, you dont need it), gift on the lord.
More plague marines are more useful than any of the extras. Automatically Appended Next Post: Except you can't split up the oblitorators.. strange ruling...
