So as the title says, I like Space Wolves. Always thought they were pretty cool. And I've heard great things about them being in a Drop Pod army. Thing is, how do I kit them out? Here's what I've thought of so far:

Rune Priest with JotWW and Living Lightning ... 100

Grey Hunters (9) with Plasma Gun, Wolf Standard, Drop Pod ... 190

Grey Hunters (10) with 2 Plasma Guns, Wolf Standard, Drop Pod ... 205

So, for 500pts is this a good starting place?

Looks like a nice drop pod set up to me! I think one of the top 16 adepticon lists was 2 rune priests and a whole bunch of MSU pods with wolf standards and plasma guns. Might have been some wolf guard in there too.

I'd swap the 2 big squads for 3 smaller ones so that you get 2 pods first turn rather than one.

Rune Priest Jaws, LL. 100
6 GH with meltagun, pod 130
6 GH with meltagun, pod 130
6 GH with plasma gun, pod 135

This also means you can deploy one squad and drop their pod empty to get all your men on the board on Turn 1.

Yeah but he can't do that if he's allying under 2000pts.

The OP's configuration is pretty much a standard loadout, with the only thing missing being a Mark of the Wulfen (and even that's optional). You can't go wrong with that loadout.

Something else to consider is 2 squads of 10 Grey Hunters, and 3 combiplasma Wolf guard in a third pod with the priest riding with the Wolf Guard.

And dont forget that you can cut the GH numbers even deeper to bring a second Rune Priest since Wolves get two HQ choices per slot.

Also depends on your other (iron hands) units. Iam also making a droppod army with spacewolf allies and I really like to give them a little close combat punch.

If you add a wolfguard with terminator armour + power mace + combiweapon (I would take melta because my tactical units already got grav-weapons instead of plasma) + mark of the wulf you got sum extra punch.

I really like the terminator armor against Hell drakes. Keep the wolfguard on the front and he can take the vector strike and dragon breath.

Hmmm, I too have begun making a Space Wolves army, and this really helps (Chaos never let me take drop pods!).

I did find that the Intercepting Riptide blasts just tears apart the drop pod squads however, and those are surprisingly common. Even Broadsides can Intercept too. And so many people can take Tau allies just for that!

How does a drop pod list deal with that? Can't use Jaws on the Riptide til after the Intercepting of course.....

You deal with Interceptor fire by making sure you have cover from the Riptide, since the Tau won't be able to strip your cover saves in your Movement phase unless they happen to have attached a psyker with Perfect Timing to the Riptide.

Edit: The prospect of It Will Not Die drop pods is too hilarious to be ignored.

If you bring a full droppodlist with space wolf allies you can field a lot of space marine bodies. lets say you bring 9 tactical marines with tigirius (psychic schriek and/or puppet master) and 9 grey hunters with a rune priest. If you drop them in cover near those riptides then the need a lot of shots to remove 9 marines to get to the runepriest or tigirius. Large blast should not get more then 3 marines IF the hit.

Yeah, my Iron Hands are bringing lots of snootiness to the field, and even some close combat in the form of Ironclad Dreadnoughts (cause Ironclads with IWND is hilarious).

I brought in SW to be a force that's just as shooty as the main force, yet can be ready for the countercharge from my opponents.
