Thinking of deploying an ADL forward and parking a few Vindicators behind it. Protect from incoming shooting

The short range of the Vindicators puts them at a disadvantage for this. If you're planning on having them sit and shoot for the whole game you'll have to deploy them up front, nice and close to the enemy anti-armour guns. Personally I wouldn't recommend such a tactic.

What Codex are you playing? If you want Vindicators your best bet would be to take allied Blood Angels since they have faster ones, can move 12" and still fire their cannons.

I think it would better to park stuff like stalkers or whirlwinds behind the ADL.

Have you considered a skyshield? they work better for tanks, IMHO, as they give you an invulnerable save instead of cover (and as tanks can't go to ground, it's better), a raised firing position, 3" more on an opponents charge range, through difficult terrain and no worries about being snuck-up on from behind, you'll still get the save even if they're on the shield with you. if you deploy the skyshield so it's half sticking out of your deployment zone, and deploy on the back half of it, any anti-tank in the opponents side might not even be able to see you on the first turn, thanks to the raised position. a vindicators siege shield also means you can drive dramatically off the skyshield without worrying about immobilising yourself.

Interesting, I hadn't considered it as an option really.

A vindicator's gun also sits partially obscured by an ADL at all times, thus providing anything it shoots at a 4+ cover save.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

Really?
Well that kinda kills that idea.
