Subject: Survarium (STALKER 3 ish, sort of, in a way) in open beta on Friday

Survarium is being developed by some of the original STALKER devs and is conceptually along similar lines although it is currently just a PVP online FPS, other games modes (64 player objective based PvE maps and solo free play maps) will be released in stages once the PvP game has been released. I'm not that interested in the PvP side of things (although going by this preview it is shaping up well) but the PvE game sounds intriguing.
There will be an 'open' beta event on Friday where anyone can download and play the latest build for 24 hours, if nothing else it looks pretty.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.
-Leman Russ, Meditations on Imperial Command book XVI (AKA the RT era White Dwarf Commpendium).
Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Its actually quite a lot of fun, a bit like Red Orchestra but less 'hardcore'. Its definitely a beta though, lots of odd little glitches, some annoying bugs and quite nasty lag.

I tought STALKER: Call of Prypiat was the same as STALKER 3.

I expected that it would have been an open world game along the lines of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but seeing that the beta's just an arena shooter's put me off. Is it going to be an open world game or an RPG at any point, or are the devs sticking with it being a shoot em up? If that's the path the game's taken it just seems really weird to me. Perhaps with the profits they'll be able to buy back the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. rights and make S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 though (though how anything's being developed with Ukraine as it is is beyond me).

Mn, an arena shooter with STALKER's horrible mechanics? The sort-of-open world thing was the only thing that made STALKER mediocre instead of horrible...

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

STALKER Shadow and especially Call of Pripiyat are my favourite games of all time. After the whole debacle with management selling the company I lost hope of ever having another true STALKER game come around again.
I've been following Suvarium from the beginning and don't have any more hope now than I did 2 years ago. Without major funding these passionate, visionary devs are never going to recapture the beauty of the originals.
They were full of bugs, glitches, and crashes if you had the wrong specs, but the storytelling, characters, searching, commerce, and atmosphere is still amazing to me.

There are 3 stages of development planned. Stage one is the arena shooter which will be used as a test bed and to bring in some money to fund further development. Stage 2 is large scale PvE and stage 3 is 'single player', the original schedule was 1 year between stages but I have no idea if that is still the plan.
What made STALKER good was its world building, from what I have seen Survarium is off to a good start in that regard.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
The various standalones were expansions, STALKER 2 was in development when GSC died.
