I'm looking at getting started with Ariadna. I've put together a set of lists, starting with 200pts and then working up to 300 and then 400pts.

200pts:

This would involve picking up the starter box and 2 blisters, the HMG Vet Kazak and the Autocannon Tank Hunter, so would cost me about £40 to get from my FLGS

300pts:

Having acquired 3 blisters comprising 2 Mormaers and a Scout, my army has reached 300pts and now has more frontliners and an additional camo/infiltrator unit (who is now my Lieutenant due to his high WIP)

How does this progression look at first glance? Is there anything missing from any of the lists that will make them harder (especially for a beginner who is going to get slapped silly anyway) to play? Are there any gaps in terms of countermeasures to certain types of units at any point?

Like I said, I'm a beginner. I've never played before so my grasp of the rules is limited to batreps I've seen.

Hi, welcome to the game.

I'm presuming that you intend to buy these bits in increments rather than get all the guys for 400 pts straight away. So I assure you that what ever you make up on the army generator now, you'll be looking at something different after you've played a few games and figured out what you like. Nothing wrong with that I sure as heck did it.

The 200 army looks reasonable. The 2 HIs and tankhunter a pretty threatening and no too easy to deal with. Having 7 orders in your pool is okay, but more is better. The majority of your orders would go into the hmg vet and the autocannon so I don't know how much use the ap rifle vet would be. An easy change would be to swap the ap rifle vet for an adhl/ap rifle tank hunter. With more camp tokens there are more options to hide the autocannon and attacking out of camp is more likely to result in a kill/ glue. Then with the spare points could get another line kazak and maybe a doctor.

A lot of HIs in your second list as well. Don't see why they are in 2 combat groups, probably a mistake. The scout Lt is interesting. Not so much of the wip as that has little effect in practice but as he is camoflagued. So he would be unexpected as the Lt, and if you can present him as a possible mine, even better. But if you dropped him for a regular chasseur instead you would be able to fit in a hmg on a mormaer. It'll probably change anyway, alongside the 400 pts but its a start.

If your attack is going too well, you have walked into an ambush

Yep, they'd be bought in increments, that's why I split the lists up (sorry, perhaps it wasn't clear they were in a sort of progression style rather than just separate lists I'd use for different points limits). Also yes, I didn't really understand how combat groups worked when I made the lists and wasn't aware they could be changed (I just thought it assigned all models after the 10th to Group 2), so I will edit them.

I sort of selected what I liked based on buying the models I liked the look of (I know proxying is encouraged but I prefer my army to be a bit "neater" than that haha) and what I could buy on a decent budget, trying to minimise unused models in boxed sets and blisters. Building an army I like to look of and enjoy playing is a huge thing for me rather than having a be all and end all list of terrifying cheese (I'm used to 40k, now I'm dropping it like a bad habit and Infinity's balance appealed to me). I'm a big fan of the Scottish and Russian models, not so much the French ones. I'm also getting these models because I'm looking at playing more modern pen and paper RPGs so they would look very nice as PCs and NPCs.

The idea behind my list progression was to sort of have a hammer and anvil type situation going on. The HI would advance up or hold objectives, being the sort of stone wall I can rely on to keep things nailed down, the infiltrators are set up in good positions to strike when ready, and anything else is flexible to move around as necessary. Camo units are sprinkled about in roles so that my opponent doesn't really know what is where and what it's going to be doing until it strikes.

Regarding the other tankhunter instead of the Vet Kazak, that might be worth me considering, I like that Ariadna is camo heavy and was thinking that my list could probably do with having a bit less HI and be a bit more mobile or at least have more camo to increase confusion. Maybe end up with a sort of ambush focused list that relies on eliminating the enemy before they get much chance to shoot (or if my opponent goes first he wont be able to hit anything because he has to discover it and then shoot at it with penalties).

Am I lacking in close quarters weapons, not melee ones but things like chain rifles and flamethrowers? I know some of my HI get them but I'm not sure if its enough.

As an aside, I see you collect Corregidor, they were the other army I was considering starting off with. I like the look of their cheap, piloted TAGs.

When I was starting, I was tossing between ariadna or nomads as well, but then the CJC starter box was released so...

The combat groups just dictate your order pools, each groups pool is independent of the others and units in one group cannot use orders from another groups pool.

There's nothing wrong with having a lot of HI, its just that it will be difficult to activate them all effectively in one turn. In the sectorial armies, link teams help mitigate this due to their order efficiency. So its unlikely you'd be able to move them all up field, or really need to. Regardless mormaers are scary with high arm and especially with the ap hmg. The only thing to watch out for ofc are weapons that roll on your bts instead of arm. Don't want to watch your mormaers melt due to one viral hit.

I wouldn't worry overmuch about direct template weapons. Its good to have some options available, in certain cases you can pull off similar things with mines (e.g intuitive attack on a camo markers). Then again in corregidor every man and his dog has a light flamethrower slapped onto his rifle, which is preferable to the shotguns many others are stuck with. If you really want more there are plenty of dirt cheap warbands available to ariadna.

If you don't want to buy the other models in box sets look for guys who do split boxes. There's ABZ and shae konnit on here that do it

If your attack is going too well, you have walked into an ambush

The easy way is always mined
