Hi everyone.
I'm completely new to 40K, but a friend of mine used to play years ago. He and I are wanting to get back into the game. I'm having trouble deciding on the army I want to invest in. I really like the looks of Chaos Deamons and Chaos Space Marines. Any suggestions on where to start?

Welcome!
I was gonna recommend IG seeing how the army is the most recently updated, but seeing how you dig the Chaos look, I recommend starting with CSM and later maybe even adding Chaos Daemons as allies, that way you get a taste of both armies and you don't go off your way in terms of collecting.

hi welcome to dakka id definately recommend chaos marines ive been playing since 09' and have played pretty much everything from space marines to tau my latest project is iron warriors CSMs and i must say theyre a blast to collect!

If you are on a budget, Daemons may let you go into fantasy later by just sticking them on different bases.
