Subject: Averland sunset or Yriel Yellow?

Just asking what do you guys prefer when painting Imperial Fists? I use Averland personally, I have tried Yriel yellow but it did not come out the way I wanted. Also would you have any tips on painting with a lighter shade of yellow?
Cheers!

Yellow is the devil's colour.
I don't do Imperial Fists, but I do have yellow highlights on my Eldar. I use a base layer of Averland with Yriel on top of that, then with Cassandora (the shade) over the top of that, then Yriel again for edges/highlights/blending. Gives a rich, warm yellow.
In terms of tips? Airbrush it, if you can. If you're doing an army that is predominantly yellow instead of highlights I would absolutely airbrush it, in the order I suggested above (or similar colours direct from Vallejo or similar manufacturers that make airbrush paints). Trying to get a smooth yellow surface can be seriously irritating, just because feth yellow, I guess.

I use Yriel over Averland Sunset. Patience is the most important part. Multiple thin layers.

Also, make sure you let each coat dry *completely* before you go to apply another layer. Easy to mess up the previous one.
Yellow sucks.

When I was painting with Yriel I did not wait long enough. Now the practice mini looks like butt. Automatically Appended Next Post: majendie wrote:Yellow is the devil's colour.

I have been looking into getting an airbrush, what do you suggest? I have heard the badger krome is okay.

I use Delta airbrushes. However, because the devil managed to make his way from painting yellow to driving Delta bankrupt, you can't really get them anymore, which is a shame, because they kick arse. The badger brushes are very good by all accounts, however.
It sounds a bit expensive to start using an airbrush (since they cost ~$100/ea and the compressor can be above $200) but ultimately it will save you money. Your paints will go further, your sanity will be saved, and you can start doing some really cool stuff. Once you have your brush, look into the Vallejo Air paints. They can usually go straight in and they have as many if not more colour options than GW. I love using the acrylic surface primers - it really brings home how far you can make the paint go. I have one 200ml bottle that I got for $12 inc. shipping. It is about half empty now, and has done 3000+ points of Tyranids and another 3000+ points of Eldar basecoating. Where a GW spraycan costing $26 will last you maybe two or three units, this stuff just goes on for ever. Fantastic.
I do all my basic colours through the airbrush, which lets me get complex colours (including azimuthal shading and complex blends I could never hand paint) on extremely quickly, then it's simply a matter of highlighting and detailing. Allows you to paint large armies very fast, and small armies very well.

I dont do imperial fists... but for my badmoon orks; I paint them in a beige basecoat, wash with agrax earthshade, and then layer with dorn yellow (the really pale edge paint), and wash that with casadora yellow, then sucessive layers of dorn yellow and lamenters yellow glaze untill Im happy.
Seems really easy but I get a slightly cold lemon yellow out of it, you might want more casndora yellow layers to keep it warmer for imperial fists.

I think you have sold me on the airbrush I have been looking at different websites and I am not sure who to buy off. Could you or anyone recommend a good site to buy brushes and compressors from?
Cheers

For the UK http://www.everythingairbrush.com
...sadly I cannot help you overseas. You will want one that can sell you spare parts for whatever brush you buy ideally.
My personal favorite is the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution, simply wonderful piece of engineering. So much so, that the Badger patriot 105 I have is considered trash tbh.
Havent held any of the newer models; krome, renegade, velocity etc. but I was really put off them by the 105.
