Just a simple question to New Astra Militarium players out there who are planning to run any of the new Scion units in there army, which formation will you run? The Airborne formation gives you the ability to bring in 4x Valkyries in a single reserve roll, which can be nasty with all of the upgrades you can give them, however the Taurox Prime formation gives you to field a light armored, but fast vehicle with a lot of firepower for both Anti-Armor and Infantry. So please share your thoughts on which one you prefer and the reasons why mates!

Oh, haha, I was going to post a comment several times here, but whenever I got around to writing one, something distracted me.

Personally I like both of them and I think both have their own uses. The Taurox one is cheaper and it's a great addition to a Taurox-mounted core. That way you can play SWAT-style with a bunch of commandos embarked in armoured trucks. Kitted out either base with the battle cannon/autocannon, Taurox spam will give you enough S7 fire to pop regular transports such as Rhinos and Chimeras and them being Fast vehicles means that you will get plenty of occasions for some side armour goodness.

The valkyrie formation seems to be a bit cooler in that it uses one of best looking flyer models, gives you access to your only high str weapon in the Codex(lascannon on a 12/12/10 flying frame) along with anti-air potential and has greater mobility, but it gets very pricy very fast. That being said dropping Scions from them even onto terrain is perfectly safe thanks to their Move Through Cover special rule with some twin-linking goodness there.

Overall I think they're definetely a must-have in every Militarum Tempestus army because at the fee of a single commissar(25pts) that is fairly useless you can get everything you would take normally, but with additional, fantastic rules. They also let you expand beyond the 6 troop limit in an army that depends in 90% on it's troop entries.

They could also be fine as addition to an Astra Militarum, Imperial Knights or any imperial army that lacks what they'd give it, as they're separate detachments that don't take up allied slots, which means that you can get some scoring goodness in fast vehicles that comes as a whole on a single reserves roll!

The Taurox formation would be wonderful if you got the Outflank result on the IG/AM warlord table. The ability to get meltas and/or other good AP weapons right into the enemy force can cause misery to vehicles and tough armored infantry while splitting the enemy's focus for quite a bit cheaper than flyers.

Or just forget the vehicles, just charge some other Taurox right into a forest near the enemy, pop smoke (then pray), and let the Tempestus unit deepstrike in right where you want them next turn.

Disclaimer: This is really more speculation than experience, I have yet to really use a large Tempestus Platoon. From their previous Codex bretheren, however, I do know that they work best when they just appear out of the blue next to the enemy, so employing an even larger number, especially with vehicles, could panic your opponent into focusing their fire heavily on them.

You can make it more reliably by taking a tank commander. your chance of getting it as a result increases from 1/6 to 1/3.

Alternatively, Creed has a minutely better chance of getting it, with a potential 36.67% chance of collecting the power.

I can agree that the Valkyrie formation is a lot cooler, however the big difference is in the points and the number of Scions I can run per formation, which has got me thinking about what would be better in the long run. With the Taurox Prime Formation, I can run 3x 10-Man squads with special weapons (still debating what to run), Command Squad w/1x Vox and 3x H.S.V.L.G. and the Commissar, all in 4x Taurox Primes w/Searchlights, Missile Launchers and Autocannons. All of that is about 200 points cheaper compared to 4x Valkyries kitted out, and the Scion Squads are only 5x man with the Valkyries, so I can see the worth of running the Taurox Primes for the extra bodies and immediate firepower they bring to the table.

Overall, The Taurox Prime formation is great for a regular Scion army or even a Imperial army for the abundance of AP3 and long range weaponry it brings turn 1, but the Valkyrie formation is good to run with an army that lacks air support such as Space Wolves and Sisters of Battle.
