Subject: Confused about Kow & WHFB miniature size

I recently started collecting and painting miniatures and at the moment i have some WHFB units completed. My plan is to make some really big armies and since the prices of warhammer miniatures are so high i decided to mix them with lots of KoW miniatures. After searchign a bit on the forums most players say that WHFB and KoW are combatible but on the official mantic site all units have a size of 20mm (core units).Thats like 30% smaller which looks quite bad for me.Can anyone give me some feedback about miniature size or add some photos so i can finally decide what path i should choose? Thanks in advance

I think you may have misread it. Most of the mantic KoW core units have a base size of 20mm. That's not how tall the minis are, just how wide the standard base is.

Uh, GW bases are also either 20mm or 25mm. Stuff like skaven and elves are on 20mm, orcs and chaos are 25mm. Mantic models are about 28mm in height, same as GW. The proportions are different though, as Mantic isn't the same heroic scale as Warhammer. Hope that helps.

Tnx for the quick answers
I mostly worry about how an army would look if i mix WHFB and KoW minaitures and also about my ability to paint even smaller miniatures than WHF

Kow minitures are a similar height to GW but they do tend to be less chunky and more thinly proportioned for the most part.

Mantic miniatures have a very different style from GW - among other things the zombies, ghouls, and skeletons actually have human proportions instead of humungous heads, feet, and hands.
Their elves are very thin - almost insect like. A lot of people really do not like them, but I think that they are just fine. But not compatible with the look of GW elves.
Their dwarfs... may be the best bet for mixing and matching, even though they really do not match the GW style. (They have knees!)
The orcs and goblins also have a distinct style - and given a choice between GW and Mantic orcs... ... ... I have both. The Mantic orcs are a lot less cartoony, but I still like the GW orcs....

Here's a review of the Undead figures with some great side by side photos with the GW equivalents:

Really none of the GW and Mantic races are visually compatible. Even races like the dwarves where the proportions are similar are drastically different in style. They look fine fighting against each other on the same battlefield, but in most cases mixing within the same unit or army is going to be a bit visually discordant.

The undead from Mantic and GW fit together just fine, as long as you're using the current VC models. The older GW undead (still around with many of the Tomb Kings) are bigger, but that's because the base parts of those models are 25 years old and some of GW's earliest plastics.

Sorry to bump this to the top, but I got some decently priced LotR elves to make for a couple elite elf units. How well do they scale to KoW elves? They're slightly shorter than MaAs. Thanks. Since this was a thread on different sizes, it felt appropriate to shanghai the thread instead of making a new one.

They're fairly close actually
Since many LotR plastics can be had fairly cheaply, using Galadhrim or 2nd age Elves can work as Palace guard, and Galadhrim knights for Stormwind Cavalry.
Also - Gondor for Kingdoms of Men as there's mostly direct analogues.
There's a fair number of people that actually play War of the Ring style ( LotR figures on movement trays) with Kings of War rules as KoW is much quicker and doesn't have weird rules (like the entire shooting rules for WotR)

While they are similar in terms of size they are very different visually. I do really like the LOTR elves.

That would be my observation as well. The style is really quite different. I could see them battling each other as different races of elves, but nothing about them suggests that they would look right in the same force.

Keep them in different units and painted in a thematically similar way and they'll be absolutely fine. It's no different to these guys being in the same army:
Or even these:
As for height/scale differences between figures, there's nothing like real life to guide your scale comparison:
That middle one above is the 8 nations alliance circa 1900. Alliance. As in detachments would have fought alongside one another in a conflict. Never mind looking around at the different heights of the people you work or go to school with...

To me its not the height thats a problem but the torso size.

Seems to be part and parcel of the whole package, looking at the pictures above. The Mantic elves are outliers, but then again, elves.
