Morning guys,
Looking at getting together a unit of Ultramarine tacticals. I'm interested to find out what colors would be nessacary in the Air Model range to base, shade and highlight (2/3 highlights) an Ultramarine?
Any opinions on this and what is an effective paint scheme/method.
Also, what shoulder trim (company) do you think looks best on the Ultramarine?

Gold, red, black, white. Those are the primary colors from the color wheel.
Vallejo model air line doesn't really have an ultramarines blue you can get close but the easiest thing would be to acquire either army painter or take the straight blue color and add a small drop of black for the darkest areas, then slowly lighten it for each layer till you are pointing directly down to do your highlights by adding white slowly to the mix.
You will probably have to clean out the gun after adding the black to the blue and start with a fresh mix of blue and slowly add thinner and small drops of white as you move to the highlights.
Thinner will also lighten the color of the paint but vallejo's air line does not need it honestly.
Pure white
Black,
Blue
That should give you what you want to do.

I have quite a good collection of Citidel paint and also some army painter, specifically Mccarge Blue, Ultramairne Blue (Army Painter) and Caledor Blue. It might require I darken or lighten these with black or white but if I run this through with Tamiya thinner do you think I'll be on a good track?

Hull Red, Dark Sea Blue, Light Sea Blue, and White can get you some great looking Ultramarines.
Working from darkest to lightest: for the base/shadow color, mix Dark Sea Blue and Hull Red 5:1 (it darkens the blue without turning purple), mix Dark Seal Blue and Light Sea Blue 3:1 and use that as your first highlight over 3/4 of the model leaving the previous color in the shadows, use Light Sea Blue to highlight the previous layer, and if you want to really up the contrast use pure White to spot highlight things like the helmet, shoulders, backpack, etc. (this step is optional).
Shoulder trim depends on what company you decide to paint them as. The most popular is 2nd Company, which is gold. However, I think 4th Company, which is green, looks pretty cool.

Buypainted uses the following colours for the blue:
- French Blue (base)
- Insignia Blue (shade)
- French Blue + White (highlight 1)
- Sky Blue (highlight 2)
Red:
- Fire Red (base)
- Tank Brown (shade)
- Scarlet Red (highlight over white)

Thanks Yonan.
I imagine a black primer will give a richer blue but the grey and white primer will be a lot lighter blue.

I am doing pretty much this, mainly from watching Jaro from buypainted's tutorials
Basecoating was how he does his DV models - All in black / horizontal highlights in light grey / top down in white
Then I changed things a bit and heavily thinned VMA French blue and gave it a hit of that, waited for that to dry and then thinned a bit more and hit it again - it basically pinwashed the models. (Edit: hard edged, not pinwashed)
I was considering another highlight of sky/glacier blue (which is what Jaro does), but I don't think it needs it (and tbh, I am not happy with the way the basecoats turned out, next time I will thin them a bit and lower the pressure on the brush). That said, this was basically a demo batch of models that I am happy to completely stuff up, after my horrible foray into oil washing.
As for colours, I have gone 5th company - black, looks pretty good so far, particularly with the squad/company markings on the knee

Delivering
These came out super dark for some reason, will try to stop them washing out later - but you can get the idea, particularly on the sergeant, the chain and his arm highlight the effect
Also hi-res pictures show what a crap job I have done so far

New camera, way more detail - I am quite terrible with this camera, so yeah.
Anyway, after looking more closely at them in pictures, I have now remasked their knees/legs and will be doing another highlight - probably UK Azure (5:1 with French Blue) or Light Sea Blue
UK Azure is too pastel, Light Sea Blue is too cartoony
