OK so after some horse trading with the wife I've got about $1000 army building budget,
I've already got a decent Space Marine army bout 1200pts
Chaos pieces from DV-no real desire to do evil marines
Orcs from Black Reach-had though of fleshing this army out but have decided to wait on the new codex

So I was thinking Imperial Guard, like the fluff plus they have a shiney new codex,

The question is if I buy the CDF box set, and the Hammer of Cadia box how far away from a vailiable army am I, also I want to build a primary armour based force so is the CDF even a good idea,

I've had some bad luck thinking the box sets were the way to build a quick force and I don't really ant to go down that road again, so if nothing else what do you think of the sets?

Have you thought about third party models such as Vic Minis, Dreamforge Eisenkern, Mantic corp troops and so on? Alternately you could convert guardsmen from things like WHFB Beastmen for renegade guard or something. Cadians and Catachans... I think they're pretty bad looking kits so recommend avoiding them.

Hell hounds are very questionable, so the Hammer of Cadia is of arguable worth. If they could be assembled as Chimeras it would be good though. If you do drop big $ on GW products, make sure you buy from a discounter where you get 20-30% off.

Might want to hold of until may, with rumors of 7th flying around you can never know what will be good and what will be crap with a new edition.

Everything I say, barring quotes and researched information, is my personal opinion. Not fact.

Wait a month and see if the rumours are true for not the 7th edition and see what it changes.

I say go Tyranids after reading what happens.

You should still play what you like, as opposed to what's "good".

To a degree. However, 40k is a pretty big investment if you have any interest in having a...well, effective (seems like the right word versus competitive) army. And by that I mean if you your want win/lose ratio to be influenced more by skill level and game knowledge versus list construction.

There's a thread discussing this you have any interest: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/592331.page

While I strongly sympathize with playing what you like, I think that considering the strengths and weaknesses or a force, coupled with your own play style, is very important to having a satisfying experience.

Well, I meant models from ebay at best new and not assembled (or new, assembled, and maybe undercoated).

Yeah, then you can spend $1000 to hate yourself for the rest of your life (I assume GW will not be giving Sisters a reasonable update in our lifetime).

Start the army you like the fluff and models the most.

Even if you are starting an armour based army you still need troops choices (the rules).
Imperial guard are known for having lots of so you'll want to grab some of those (if you are set on the CDF set then you'll want at least two. That also means anouther two LRs so thats a plus.
On top of that you also need at least one HQ choice so a commissar or something (I'm not super knowledgeable on all of their specific HQs). This is also part of the rules for the game (see FOC chart)

This thread is basically just going to be people saying their favorite army.

If it were me, and I had $1000 to blow, I would probably invest in some forgeworld stuff. If you're a really good painter it's some of the only stuff that you can sell back for retail or more.

I'll just say that if you want to start an IG army, you're free to do so, because the new codex is great and if you're going to buy models, buy either unassembled ones from eBay or just collect them one by one in boxes. To be honest all those army deals, sets and boxes that GW is pushing right now always contain some kind of a stinker that is 99% likely to be useless to you.

What I'd recommend would be at least 3 chimeras, 3 cadian squads(or whatever you seek to run), 2-3 manticores as they're beasts and have no real competition on heavy slots(wyverns aren't that great) and then decide about your HQ. If it's tank commander, then you need 2 Leman Russ boxes - recommending the demolisher/punisher kit to build the latter. Pasknisher combo is fantastic and feels great when you roll 20 dice.

A vendetta or two is never a bad investment either. You might want to buy Scions boxes instead of Cadians if you want to run your army with veterans on grenadier doctrine as Scions are the only IG kit that comes with carapace armour and with bereted heads they could be easily used as grenadier vets(just cut off the power cord from hotshots and you're good to go).
