Subject: Massive clearance of GW store shelves?

Well, another of those rumours where you first think, this can't be true, but then think, GW might actually do this:
anonymous source on Faeit 212 wrote:Huge 7 page list of items to be known lossed and returned to corporate. Vast majority is Lord of the Rings. Some odd core/troop choices for both Fantasy and 40k as well. These are going to direct order only. Likely, it is a move similar in the past, that those items that don't sell well get pulled to make more shelf space.
another anonymous source on Faeit 212 wrote:This is a new strategy that has started. For instance the plan is to slowly renew all the core troops. And in preparation for this there pulling older boxes back so they don't have to throw away a lot of items. This is the same for other models. Long planning cut backs, everything they have in the warehouse, they control directly.
Second, the plan is to have all GW shops eventually sell only the new models and models in the new boxes. All finecast kits and old box art will disappear from the shop floor eventually. This is partly due to shop floor spaces (more one man stores with less wall space) and less of their assets in the shops. Which seeing there decline in the stock is a logical step.
This would answer the question how GW plans to save even more costs, now that most sales staff is reduced to one, opening hours are reduced, most HQs disbanded and only the UK- HQ staff is bloated. Reducing stock is one of the last things left.

I'd like to see that list.
There are already plenty of plastic box sets that you can't get from indie stores anymore. I don't like this development one bit.

not exactly surprising,
they've put out a whole load of new kits in the last couple of years and that takes more shelf space (even accounting for dual kits which don't)
interesting to see the list though

Nothing new, I'm afraid...
They seem strangely intend on killing themselves. Do they honestly believe that their own webstore will make up for the lost sales at indy-stores?
And how are their own stores going to react, now that they're being undercut by their own supplier?
I'm not a legal expert, but isn't Games Workshop getting dangerously close to breaking some laws here? Effectively, they're using their status as manufacture and distributor to help their own store gain an advantage.
And what about all of us who doesn't have a store nearby? What about Little Timmy who hasn't got a credit card? Do they really think that Little Timmy's mum will let him play around with her card?

If it's for sale in a physical GW store it needs to be available for Indies to stock, if they take it out of their own stores then they don't have to let Indies have it.

The only thing that makes be doubt this could actually be a new GW policy(well, at least in terms of the plausibility of the rumour itself, obviously you could desiccate a small ocean with the amount of salt necessary to consider Faeit-sourced claims) is the idea that this is in any way related to GW "renewing" the core troops kits.
Space Marines got new Tacticals because they're Space Marines, I fully expect GW to be churning out deformed plastic Catachans, Cadians, Marauders, and teeny-weeny Men at Arms until the sun grows into a Red Giant and consumes the Earth.

On top of that, nothing here indicates they're going to stop indies from selling older stock.
Given the nature of the new one man stores, it's a perfectly sensible move. Whether one man stores (or having store in the first place) is sensible is another matter altogether.

I can believe this. GW is definitely the sort of company that would believe that when part of your product line isn't selling, less advertising will help.

If only someone had posted about this the other day...
By and large the stuff for WHFB that was getting called back was Wood Elf units that still have the Kopinski artwork and Finecast characters, Bretonnian characters in Finecast(if the stores still had any), Dwarf units that still have the Kopinski artwork and Finecast characters, and Empire Finecast characters. The Empire Cannon and Helblaster Volley Gun were also being pulled.
The stuff for 40k that was getting called back is primarily Finecast characters, not just for any single faction though. Catachan Battleforces and Cadian Battleforces were also sent back.
For The Hobbit the stuff that went back was primarily Finecast character sets. I didn't see any plastic stuff in the big ol' box of stuff to go back.
They also had their stores send back any unsold Psyker/Battle Magic card sets, any of the "Hill" terrain sets(which are apparently being discontinued).
Oh also, according to the manager? They were not told whether anything is going Direct Only or being flatout discontinued.

Yeah, that was my take, too- have they actually redone any of the core choices for the less popular armies? I thought it was all about giant monster and elite dual-kits. At least for fantasy, the core seemed to be untouched for most armies, even if it was pulled to direct only.

At a nearby GW store, they've gotten rid of most of the fine cast as well, but that was expected. Tomb Kings troop boxes went as well. I didn't look closely at what else was going.

You know, I had noticed a weird post on my local GW Facebook page, showing a whole lot of kits sitting in a pile on a table with the caption "I wonder what this is all about..."

I thought to myself "well, it can't be a clearance sale." Funnily enough, that was first comment someone posted I guess people outside the realm of Dakka are in-fact aware of GW's...quirks.
So it looks like what they were offering was a LAST CHANCE TO PICK THESE ITEMS UP!

The Dark Elf Warriors just got redone.
Eternal Guard are being redone and on paper they were a Core kit since a Highborn leading the army meant they were Core but any other kind of character meant they were Special.
Beastmen got a new Ungor and Gor set(kind of).
Space Marines didn't even really get "new" Tacticals from what I understand. I'll be surprised if GW doesn't go under in 2 years... let alone be around in the far flung future... they'll be the next Atari, Fasa, WizKids, Rackham, etc.

As much as I dislike doomsaying (GW has been near collapse for twenty years now), the last year's release schedule has definitely been bewildering. The seeming (even if not actual) collapse of support of WHFB at GW doesn't help, either.

Actually, I'd find it far more likely that they do the same thing Best Buy and a few other retailers have done. Which is to put one of those large vending machines in malls where you put in your credit card and pick the item you want. ( example here)
