I thought I'd toss this out to the crowd.

Originally stumbled across this game being mentioned in the comments section of some Kickstarter. Regardless, the creator has been slowly plugging away at making a very Heroquest/ Warhammer Quest style game with some rocking looking figures.

Here's one of the test figures he's cast. One of the heroes if I remember correctly, along with a size comparison.

Renders of baddies that caught my attention in the first place:

I'll let you all take a gander if you're interested, and hopefully after posting this I can get the game designer to come start dropping pictures and info here instead of only on facebook.

Interesting. I can see why they appealed to you. That hero dude looks kind of like Baron Karza to me. Odd choice for a "hero" character.

That's the aim with Darklight, the Heroes are not your typical knights in shiny armour, they fight demons and collect souls all day long to remain alive, their sanity and priorities are constantly tested.

The game does not label your character "good" or "evil", I believe that each situation is circumstantial, and those around you are those who will perceive something as negative or positive, so if you get away stealing something you do not become evil, but if you do get caught your reputation will suffer.

You can see more of the Heroes at darkicegames.com

I find measuring labels on miniatures often do not really match the specifications so they end up just confusing people, so to make it easier I will tell you they are pretty much the same size of the Kingdom Death ones (Which I believe calls them 35mm). You can check the pic above comparing the knight to the skeleton, then if you check this pic of the KD ones you see it is pretty much the same thing: http://www.brueckenkopf-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/KD_54mmTwilightKnightScale.jpg

The reason for this is that highly detailed miniatures like those, looks really bad when you scale them down to 28mm and lose most details.

May I ask around when the production will take place?
Or is going to be any crowdfunding campaign?

Thank you for the unexpected nostalgia. I recognized the name, but not its source. A quick search took me back to my most-enjoyed childhood toy collections from 35 years ago. I'd forgotten all about my precious Micronauts, and how much I loved them.

A crowdfunding campaign is targeted by Q4 this year, so hopefully production won't be too far after that, however we still want to make sure the game plays as good as it looks, and the feedback to make that happen can take some time.

Anyone living in the UK can attend the Game Expo on the 31st of may to play test it!

I gotta say, I like the snippets I've read so far. I understand it is still in development, but as a lorehound I certainly want to learn more about the world of the game and its inhabitants.

If the rest of the 'hero' models look like the knight above, I will certainly be happy.

All the words like Dark, Gothic, Horror, and Souls really makes me think of another game series that hasn't been mentioned... which would be Dark Souls and Demon Souls. Which are punishing, dark, violent games (that I love dearly). So as someone who likes sitting down at a table with friends, this looks fun and interesting. I look forward to more information.

I am glad you brought that up, as I forgot to mention that I take great inspiration from the soul series when imagining the world, the people and the exploration.

Darklight can be quite harsh at times, this is the philosophy at the heart of the game "You do not play Darklight to become powerful and wealthy Heroes, those are only the perks that come with the adventures, you play it to see how long you can survive its harsh, brutal world and being able to brag about it while telling the stories of your adventures."

Most games nowadays give you many second chances, and the ability to complete any stage of the game at any time, but not in Darklgiht. Take Descent 2 for example, good game, but personally when I play it as a Hero I never feel in risk of dying and losing everything I have achieved so far, so I only play it to pass the time with friends, while when I play Darklight, I need to value if I should use the group heals or hold on a little longer and risk death and lose everything, and that keeps me on the edge.

I sometimes consider Darklight a great tool to generate stories as there are so many variables while you play that almsot every dungeon gives you a memorable moment.

Because the world of Darklight (Intermundis) has been ravaged by a demonic apocalypse, there is much destruction left, and things are not as clear as they used to be, so I want to keep the lore a bit of a mystery, to be discovered throughout the items they find during their adventures, so if they read (optional) the description on a sword they find, they might learn something about the character which used this weapon where it was made or the ceremonial history. The game is absolutely packed with lore but I am still debating how much of it to write down and how much should be left to the player's imagination.

That is exactly what I loved about the Souls games. They don't beat you over the head with Lore. At first, it can actually seem like they didn't even bother putting in Lore stuff... and hten as you progress through the game, and you talk to different NPC's and read the item descriptions, you get these interesting puzzle pieces that slowly start to snap together.

People STILL debate over who is who and who is what and all sorts of things about the Souls games. And I think it was a clever way to go about filling people in on the game world.

It'll be interesting to see how you use that storytelling tactic through the gameplay.

I gotta ask, since this is a wargaming site and I like minis... will the miniatures that come with the game come with multiple weapon/gear options to represent items they might acquire? Or will they have a more 'standard' pose and your equipment is modified through cards instead. I did notice the knight seems to have a Sword and Board or Greatsword option, so that looks cool.

The main Heroes will have always an option between heads and arms, so for instance the Black Knight has like you said the option to pose him with a sword and shield or two handed sword and we also recently added a second helm.

The demons you see there, the Skorn, have a total of 2 different body poses and armours, 6 arms and 3 heads, enough to assemble 6 Savages (melee) 6 Hunters (bowmen) and 3 Shamans (You can check the other body types in the facebook page or wait until the main website is updated). The joins are rounded so you can pretty much place the arms in any position you want and tilt the head as you see fit.

Not every single monster is customizable due to the size and practicality of them, for example the Crawler also posted above, comes as it is (base separated) but we might add variations like a version only with skull with legs.

It is likely that depending on the success of the game even more customization will be added in the future, but for now to make this project achievable and at an affordable price we are trying not to exaggerate.

Probably a good call. Thanks for answering! I know I like having helmeted options whenever possible, but some people like faces. I'll have to check the facebook page once I'm home, as I'm currently workblocked.

Make sure you keep us updated as you progress! It is always good to get some live feed from the designer after all, though I know the closer you get to launching everything, the more chaotic things are going to get. I wish you luck with the project.

You guys should take a look at the Darklight site, as it's got a lot more game info there.

I too am a big fan of how the Souls games present their world.

PLEASE make sure you've got someone either taking lots of pictures, doing game reports and write ups, recording... whatever for that demo game. Then you can post all that stuff up in here, on Board Game Geek, all those outlets that can help the game get exposure.

For people concerned about the size I mocked up a quick photo to show you exactly how tall Darklight miniatures are in comparison with GW and KD.

Keep in mind the knight is bent a little so if he would stand straight he would be as tall as a KD miniature.
