If I have 4++ shield drones as the closest guys to a firing model they take ALL the wounds until they fail correct instead of my 3+ save guys correct? So if he does 15 wounds do a squad of 5 each model doesnt get 3 wounds, they get allocated from the closest forward right?

Okay this seems pretty simple to me. This is a mixed wound allocation question and my interpretation of the rules is pretty clear after reading them, I just want more support on my side. the rules clearly state "continue allocating to closest model" correct?

Anyways yes I screwed up but I looked at the rule and he was adament at the table he was right despite my half hearted memory of the rules and disregard for the result of that game he continued to insist we had done it wrong in the past when he played as the tau.....

I feel like I got cheated. Granted I could have just looked it up right then.

Yea, I'm a little fuzzy on your situation, but I think you were right.

If your unit is hit with 15 wounds, then you would start taking saves from the closest model to the firing unit until that model fails a save, then apply them to the next closest model, etc. until all wounds have been saved against.

Yes. A single wound is allocated to the closest model. If the model is still alive, then another single wound is allocated to that model, etc. Once that model dies, then the next closest model is allocated a single wound, etc....

If the crises suit is behind 3 shield drones, then the shield drones will die one at a time, before the crises suit gets any wounds allocated to him.
(Keep in mind, barrage weapons, precision shots, focus fire, Line of Sight, and perhaps a few other things will mess with this.

...and yet people for some inexplicable reason think that is is an easy, streamlined system...

Nothing gets my gaming excitement level higher than rolling 30 saves one... at... a ... damn... time...

Just FYI and a tip for the guy:

In mixed save units you can roll the saves in groups to speed things up.

Say you have a unit of 3 crisis suits, with 6 shield drones in front and some ork lootas shoot the crap out of them and inflict the earlier mentioned 15 wounds. Since there are 6 drones in front....:
Roll 6 dice.... odds are 3 die
3 drones left
Now roll 3 dice.. odds are1 dies.
2 drones left
Roll two dice.... odds are 1 dies
1 drone left
Roll a dice.... it dies.
Now the suits have to start making saves, but you have already resolved 12 wounds, leaving 3 for the suits to try and make.

It just speeds up the dice rolling a lot without spilling wounds over onto your suits.
