Hey Dakka dakka, I've been thinking about crusaders and how I would go about modeling one.

I'm aware they posses Flak Armour and a Storm Shield in terms of protection but I am considering modeling them in PA since, as far as I'm aware, there are no instances in which a Crusader would ever need to use his 5+ armour save. That being the case, resorting purely to his 3+ invun. save for every attack, it seems that such a conversion would not actually cause any conflict within the game's rules.

If I were to go through with this I would construct them with their 5+ PA as well as the Storm Shield which they'd rely on for the constant 3+ invun's

Opinions?

Grav guns would use a crusaders regular save as the to wound value, so that might cause some confusion if they were wearing armor that should give them a 3+.

If you could model them in a way that it was obvious they were crusaders and not just storm shield wielding marines, it would definitely be a cool conversion though.

Yeah, I would definitely be making them not look like regular marines with a storm shield.

That would be lame.

I just don't want them to look like weedy flak armour dudes. I mean, even the two official models (which I'm also a fan of) look like they're wearing carapace armour.

Gunna add a poll for convenience.

Not causing a conflict doesn't mean it's WYSIWYG, so it depends on who you're playing with and how you make the models look.

I'd be more likely to say use IG models that actually have carapace armour on. Personally I think they'd look weird in power armour as well honestly. Perhaps scion or kasrkin models?

Friendly games, sure.

Competitive, not so much.

Also, keep in mind that they can lose their Invulnerable save to a Vindicare assassin, and then they WOULD need their armor save. (Although why he's wasting his time on your Crusaders is anyone's guess.)

On this note, LotD are wounded on a 3+.

Also, Crusaders have flak armour wargear, so they *should* be armed as such.

He wouldn't lose his invuln to a vindicare. You need to lose a wound (and not be dead) to lose your invuln to a vindicare.

Marine scout models might be useful - armoured, but more lightly than marines. You'd still need to convert them heavily to not look like scouts, but that's probably true of most models.

Or if you like the robed look of the GW models, a better start might be someone from the WHFB range, where robes and armour (and big swords and shields) are a more common combination.

Maybe Eisenkern stormtroopers would be of use to you?

Saw someone doing this as their crusaders. Obviously not power armoured but I would certainly say they look like they have more than just flak armour equipped.

Here is the blog, I strongly recommend checking it out!
