ok so I play an Eldar army that I love and am happy with s its time for a new one

im stuck between tau and necrons

first of all im not even sure how necrons are competitive besides flyer spam

and my tau would be more American revolution style with a lot of fire warriors with pathfinders and hammerheads/Broadsides

so im asking you who are more experienced than myself which would you choose/how do you play them/ and why should I choose them??

I know its a lot but id rather not feed the GW corp any more money than I have to so help is appreciated.

Shred City.

Pick it based on your attraction to the models and the back story. Rules change every few years.

I'd go Necrons. Cooler story, bad ass named heroes, the models are easy to paint in large quantities, and you get to own a Monoliiiiiith!

I like both backstories and models

im talking purely about in a game since which army is easier to be strong with

Tau will ally with your eldar but everyone will hate you. TauDar is usually attacked for being the strongest and most broken alliance in the game. You will hear "CHEEESE YOU WAAC PIG DOG!!!!!". People will not want to play with you. The fluff is ok but not really grimdark enough for some people.

Necrons wont ally with your Eldar but will give you two fun armies (I play both and enjoy them both). Necrons are strong (see gauss rules and croissants, and tesla....) but aren't super overpowered and people wont refuse to play you with them (unless you go flyer spam which will make people call "CHEESEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" and run crying). Also the fluff is pretty cool (both the original and the new).

Well, Necrons are definitely one of the nicer balanced codices of the bunch, if you ask me. They're not overly powerful, but they can hold their own in pretty much any situation if played well. I don't have any experience playing them myself, but from what I've seen and played against, it's clear that they have nice tricks up their sleeves. Mind shackle Scarabs? Annoying, but powerful. The ability for Scarab swarms to munch down and reduce a vehicle's AV? Splendidly terrifying. Reanimation Protocols? Quite useful. Honestly, essentially every Necron unit is viable in one way or another. The only exception, I believe, would be the Flayed Ones, which really don't see any game time.

Tau, on the other hand, are quite the powerhorse army. As a Tau player (who started my army prior to the new Codex, thank you very much!), I must say that by choosing them, you're bound to win some games. If you ally your Tau and your Eldar, you're going to have what is considered to be one of the most powerful combinations in the game. In that regard, many people may frown upon you if you choose to do so, depending on your build, anyway. And I must say, your idea for your Tau army is without a doubt very different from the current meta, but that's a good thing! It's nice to see players willing to try something new and interesting with their armies rather than just spam what's considered to be the most powerful units.

But before anybody can really help you, I must ask, what exactly are you looking for in a new army? Do you want to be super competitive, or are you just looking to have some fun with some new guys? Are you more interested in a shooty army, or a mixed one? What concerns you most in a new army, looks, playstyle, competitiveness, the lore?

Personally, I started a Tau army as my second army since I really loved their visual design. They're so smooth and futuristic, a nice contrast to my spiky Chaos Marines. In addition, as I play Khorne, I wanted a shooty army to give myself some variety.

im looking for an army that I can use and build a tournament strong army that can work as a take all comers army

fun is enjoyed but id like competitive as well

more shooty my elder are combat wraith heavy so I choose strong shooty armies that I like.

a new army needs to be competitive for me because my meta is powergamers.

sadly a lot of this points to tau but I want to choose my army regardless of its overpowered-ness

Shred City.

If your meta is all powergamers and WAAC peeps, I'd say go Tau, bring a wicked Taudar list and just steamroll everyone. This decision is pretty much made now with that detail in mind, ha ha.

Tau aren't as resilient as your wraiths.

But if your intrested with peure competitiveness both would work,

Tau: Riptides, railguns, and marker lights galore will ruin everyone's day.

Necrons: Worriers or immortals in Night Scythes (good flyers unlike eldar and tau) and a Destroyer lord with a group of 6 wraiths is devastating and one of the best close combat units in the game (Mind shackle cheesiness and making your enemies initiative 1 is great)

So an allied 'cron detachment could be

HQ: Destroyer lord w/ mss, sw
Troop: 2 x 6-15 warriors in Nigh scythes
Fast Attack: 6 wraiths w/ whip coils

I say Tau. They are the true competitive option right now. Necrons can handle a TauDar list but it is a tough battle and fliers aren't nearly as effective. I do agree though that alliance will get you some dirty looks in the non competitive game you play though. I went with necrons for my second army because I like the jack of all trades aspect of them.

Tau are probably more competitive, but there aint nothing wrong with the current Necron codex IMO.

Necrons will probably get a new Codex sooner or later, so that's a big unknown. We could either get an OP unbalanced codex (like Eldar and Tau), or a dissappointing one.

There are actually quite alot of Necron players, and Necrons are often a good choice for new players, because they are relatively easy to paint. GW wants new players, so because of this, I doubt they're really gonna nerf much of anything, and will probably just make the army stronger with a couple new units, reduction in points for existing units, and finally give us some codex-specific Warlord Traits and Artifacts...but I have aboslutely no way of knowing if this will be true, or even when we'll get a new Codex .

Both armies are competiive...with Necrons you may need to spend more time to figure out how everything works together.

If you at all want a strong long range fireline, go with Tau...that's what they do (as far as I can telll...not many people play them in my area). Necrons are the definition of a mid-range army...24" max on almost everything but a couple units.

If you like to play with air support, or you like the undead-ish idea of playing Reanimation Protocols, or you like the ability to transport a unit from one place to another with techno-magic, Necrons are there for you.

If you can, borrow both codexes from a friend, read through them, and see what you think you'd like to play more.

Just to mention, I'm not a big fan of this combo or allies in general, but Tau and Necrons can ally, but its "Allies of Convenience" or whatever the lowest one before "Come the Apocalypse" is called...so if you like both, you can legally play with both in one army.

Necron require tactical thinking and synergy to work well. If you want an easy army, go with Tau. You basically copy Taudar netlists and can easily stomp your opponents.

I have both codexes and own models to both and have played multiple games with them

Necrons: 7-2-1
Tau:: 10-0-0

(Win-tie-loss)

Necrons are to me more challenging to learn and handle kind if like my eldar. But tau seem very I put things here use marker lights and win. Which I why I asked you which army you thought would work in general and if they can both be competitive
