Bounding Ultramarine Assault Trooper

Hello, I'm an aspiring wargamer in Nevada, and I'm looking to play Ultramarines. Any advice for starting troops? I'm planning on three tactical squads. Also, do any of you have any ideas where to get cheaper Ultramarines? Oh, one last thing. One of my friends is really indecisive as whether to play Tau or 'Nids. He likes Tau because they seem cool to paint, but he likes the playstyle of 'Nids.
Thanks!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

I'd advise playing some proxy units and getting a few games under way. Also read up the lore and ask yourself what YOU want to do. Do you want to pick up units that you like, look cool, or have an awesome story or do you want to make a win at all cost list?
We can't decide for you, but keep in mind that you should play to have fun (be it painting, learning fluff, or just winning).

As per what to buy? A bit of everything would be my call. I love the SM and having more different units gives you options. Options are good.

Just a quick question, but what are proxy units? I've heard of proxy Magic the Gathering decks, but what are 40k proxy units?

Proxy units are units where you are using different rules for them to the correct ones.

E.g. Using a tactical squad as sternguard veterans.

^This.

One of the main problems is that 40k can be expensive. You can offset massive bad purchases by playing units as {whatever}. This should help you see what works and what doesn't. If after playing 10-20 you find you like bikers and they work then get more. If you find they die to quickly or are hard to play against your FLG then your still safe because you never bought 4 boxes at 60 bucks a pop.
