I was really excited to try Kill Team, I've played a lot of Mordheim and had a great time with that, but after playing two Kill Team games I'm really underwhelmed. I'm using the 6th ed. Kill Team book.
I played two games, one against Tyranids and one against Chaos.
My opponents felt very limited with their choices, the 'Nids only able to take genestealers, and Chaos taking five raptors. I took veterans and scions in game 1, and scions with sentinels in game 2. Both games I swept them off the table in a few turns. They both had assault lists and they couldn't compete against me with 15 individual targets, and I basically just focused fire as enemies came close, losing only a couple guys in each game.
I get that Kill Team doesn't have the extensive rules/armies design that Mordheim had, but are there house rules you guys use to make Kill Team more fun?

You could try necromunda instead.
Kill teams is nice when you want a quick game of 40k lite but thats about it.
90% of lists end up becoming spam bodies or hope no one brought anti tank.

You can try some home made stuff...
It's really good fun if you get a cool campaign going with some fun enemies and objectives.
4th edition had some really great rules but they are kinda out of date so it'd need to be re-written. I think some people have done it but i'm not sure so I can't help find them :S

We find Kill Team to be fun. Are you playing on a 4x4 with lots of terrain? Possibly it's partly the codices fault, I have little experience within those two, but our games (we tend to do multiplayer teams) tend to degenerate into a swamped middle board scrum. Much fun is had by all.
That's my personal experience though, so it is biased. But yes, Kill Team can be tremendous fun.

I must admit I've only played a few Kill Team games, but we had a blast playing it. Thing is - like in regular 40k you have to avoid using broken units to not ruin it for your enemy and.. think up a scenario. As simple as that - play it like LotR skirmish using little scenarios like those in the magazines that came with minis.. people may laugh at what I'll write now but you should...
Forge a Narrative! I found out that playing 40k battles with even most basic, video game-grade miniplot, you can have a blast! Make it some extraction mission or hunt for survivors.. hell, you can even have a zombie apocalypse game with Typhus' cultists and a few IG veterans with various weapons for epic lulz. Of course it can be something as simple as two patrols meeting each other in the ruins of a city that became the warzone, but then you should have some creatively placed terrain to make it more fun.

If you want to get into Kill Team, then I say check out Heralds if Ruin's unofficial ruleset. Fixes it so it is more skirmish based, and re-release the codices as well for it.

House Rule. Nids don't need synapse. It will make the person be able to choose other units now.

As Tanak suggested, check these rules out. Easily the best unofficial killteam rules out there. A lot of inspiration from necromunda/mordheim, has good update support, and even cool campaign rules.

I've played about 25 games or so of Kill Team, and I really get a kick out of it. You do need to get into the right mindset - because of the smaller scale, it gives you many more opportunities to forge a narrative about your dudes. At regular point levels, 40k is sort of a clusterfeth of models, with tons stuff getting killed constantly. Kill Teams is much more down-to-earth and personal.

These are pretty excellent, they give your models a lot more options for mobility, taking advantage of terrain cover, and providing support for other models. Plus, the list building is mostly per-model, instead of using 40k's regular limitations on squad sizes and equipment. It also reworks some of the army-wide mechanics (like Tyranid's Synapse, and IG's Orders) to makes them actually usable in Kill Teams. GW's implementation of Kill Teams is very lackluster by comparison, clearly an afterthought.
Just remember, Kill Teams is not a tightly designed game, so you're going to have balance issues and general wonkyness. Embrace that, and you'll have a lot of fun with it.

I am not a fan of kill team at all. It's too limiting and feels too much like 40k on a smaller scale, which is what it's going for but I play 40k because I like the idea of big battles with various types of units. If you are looking for a good skirmish game to get into I'd recommend Deadzone. Wouldn't be too hard to proxy IG/AM in for rebels, or really any force for that matter. Space Marines would transfer over quite easily into Enforcers.
