I struggle with this question and am curious if others have any general rules or advice. For example, would you upgrade your skimmers with holofields/my jetbikes with cannons/use exarchs etc OR would you save those points for another squad of Warp Spiders/swooping hawks/war walker etc? In your opinion:

1. Are any upgrades necessary (ie., vital) for any units?
2. Are there upgrade "traps" (almost always a waste of points)?
3. Do you have guidelines for when you can afford to upgrade (at 1000 pt? 1500? 2000?)?
4. What should every Eldar player know about upgrades?

Thanks for your help, Dakka!

Yes and no, I will explane.

1) the upgrades that are necessary are ones that actually MAKE sense, like exarch for a crimson hunter, but not like night vision for the avatar that's just stupid.

2) there are tonnes of upgrade traps, depending on how competitive you want means different purchases like, most of the remnants and weapon options, but as I said above, thing about what you are buying before you spend the points.

3) as is mentioned above, depending on how fluffy/competitive the game is.

4) this is the part that only comes with experience, as you choose each option you'll find what is good and what isn't, and also what fits your style and what doesn't.

So once again.

Unit of 5 avengers with exarch diresword, battle fortune=bad idea and waste of points.

Unit of 10 avengers with exrch power weapon and shimmer shield=smart idea and cost effective.

Why? because a unit of 5 avengers is big enough to hold objectives and nothing else to much effect, while the unit of 10 avengers gets the most out of the 5+ inv from the shimmer shield and them being max strength lets them be able to take the strain of combat and still be good.

If you want even more in depth examples PM me.
