So, I recently started up Tyranids and have yet to pick up a codex (Hoping for a paper back edition, or some money) and I noticed that the old editions are selling for 5 or 6 dollars, something I can easily afford. So, would most FLGS's accept an old dex? I've had no issues playing with out a dex (Well, no issues with them, plenty of issues sprouted up in the game though)?

I think you would find that most people would be less than exhilarated by that idea of you using an "old" codex.

It wouldnt be a permanent thing, just for a month or so till I can afford the current dex. I figured an old dex is better than no dex, right? I'll be limiting my self to only units that still exist in the new dex.

Some people will be cool with it, some won't, it really depends on the person.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

If you can't afford the new Codex, ask one of the local players if they have one that you can borrow when you want to play.

1.) As said, ask the person you play with, not us. Tastes differ.
2.) With Tyranids, more people will have pity with you and allow the old Codex.
3.) If you can, buy the old Codeex anyway. It has far more options and units. Many people find the new one bland and just worse. I will only play the old one even while also owning the new one, because I want to field my Doom, Mycetic spores, Ymgarl stealers and Parasite, all of them fluffy models.

It's too large a can of worms to allow everyone to pick their favorite edition of codex.

Yeah, get the old codex. I don't play Tyranids anymore, but I enjoyed the last codex quite a bit. And as has already been said, some folks will be cool with the old codex, and some won't. I think bringing a super cheesy spammy list would probably make people say no a lot quicker, but it doesn't seem like you're planning on doing that.

I dont really see that being much of an issue once I explain its more out of necessity than out of liking that codex more, I figured the issue would be incompatibility between 5th ed codex's and 6th ed rules

I still have the FAQ for the 5th Edition Tyranid Codex updating it to 6th if you want it.

Given that its still pretty new and a lot of people cant afford GW's lame prices off the bat, i imagine most of your opponents would be fine. just make it known before you agree to play, since it can change what they do by quite a bit.

If you still have it a few months down the line, then you might start getting some flak for an old dex.

Then, at worst, you'd just have to put up with a month or so of heckling. That doesn't sound too bad.

Of course, there are other ways of acquiring the codex until you buy it.

Thokt wrote:It's too large a can of worms to allow everyone to pick their favorite edition of codex.

It could be, but I bet this would create few problems in practice.

Older codices tend to be weaker, by virtue of not being in line with current rules, and there has been a fair bit of points deflation over time.

The only problem would be all those old rules that are now USR's. If you were a gentleman, and explained all the screwy stuff so that your opponent couldn't claim you cheated him by whipping out rules he didn't know about, then there really isn't much of a problem.

I wouldn't have a problem with it but that's just me. Ask your opponent as has been stated. But as long as you played by the current edition of brb rules it shouldn't be too much of an issue...

We allow a grace period of sixty days after the release of a new 'dex for players to update their rule books. Beyond that, I will not play an out-of-date codex.

It's not really necessity - you said you needed a month, so just wait a month, either borrowing someone's codex, or just waiting until you get the new one. If money is that tight, blowing $5 or whatever on something you're only going to use for just a month.

On moon miranda.

Most places aside from actual GW shops don't police what books players use. Most players will be cool with an older book if you explain what's going on.

Talk to the people you'll be playing, stop trying to justify yourself to us. It gets you literally nothing. This is a cut and dry case of ask who you play with, not random guys on the internet who have no bearing on the dynamics of your local groups and their preferences.

Well, obviously I'm going to be asking them as well, this is serving more as a testing pool on how the majority of people feel about it.

Friendly game sure, tournament game, no.

But for only 5-6 dollars I would pick one up just to have it.
