A buddy of mine has an Iron Hand army in the works. I love the FW models and very interested in starting my own 30k legion army. Kinda excited about those new books coming out.

Being an Ultramarine 40k player I want to jump into something a little different and play a traitor legion.

What traitorous legion should I look into? I know some people will want to know my play style and what not but I'm willing to play any.

I just don't know the differences between the different legions aside from what color their armor is.

What legion should start? What makes you like it?

All of the legions can play similarly because they all have access to most of the same units. I say go with Alpha Legion, they have some damn good rules to support them and are extremely flexible in terms of play style.

not all of the 30k armies are out yet. all the rules for those avail at the moment are in the HH books from FW..

Perhaps World Eaters for the more unhinged, berserker look in contrast with your ultramarines? They also have some fantastic legion specific models.

AL is out, they have some really neat rules. Not every legion plays the same unless you simply skip on the RoW. My Legion, the Night Lords, favors jump packs and terminator armor along with large blobs. Not because of fluff but because we have bonuses in assault when we outnumber opponents and jump packs and term armor make them count as double. Also have some really hard hitting assault units and a pretty cool RoW.
-AL gets to pick another specialized unit from another Legion.

-iron Warriors have some really badass shooty terminators.

But every Legion has its plusses and minuses. If I lose my warlord, every unit in my army has a chance to head for the hills to <ahem> regroup.

Look for the various reviews of the new book and generally those will tell you what the Legions get. Supposedly they are coming out with a total army book with just the rules. I haven't looked to see if its up yet.

The Alpha Legion rules seem very in keeping with the flavour of the Legion, as do the rules for Alpharius. Sneaky, double-dealing and messing with your opponent's head.

No specific models out yet, though. And is the paint scheme blue or green? Hard to tell!

I'd love to go for Death Guard. Just can't afford to get into 30K right now.

Yes, book 3.

Have a read through all the fluff and see which legions background and story appeal the most to you.

Barring that, choose based on aesthetics. Only a few of the legions have a reasonable number of unique units which FW currently make models for. Personally I like the EC models the most though my personal army is DG.
