OK, I obviously don't want to get beat every game. But I also don't want to be "that guy". My standard 40k armies are daemons, eldar and sometimes dark angels. I fancied a change so I grabbed the Space Marine codex as I thought this would throw tonnes of options at me for kill team.

I've always loved stern guard. And the new plastic models I think are brilliant. So I decided that I wanted to use this kit. But I wanted to stay pretty themed. So I've come up with this. I know it won't win tourneys. But should be fun and be able to deal with a fair amount.

Stern guard Kill Team. Total: 199 points.

Chapter tactics - salamanders.

Veteran sergeant. Melta bombs. Master crafted boltgun.
Veteran. Heavy flamer. Feel no pain specialist
Veteran. Multi Melta. Ignores cover specialist
Veteran. Combi Plasma. Perferred enemy specialist
Veteran.
Veteran.
Veteran.

I know people will scream at me for not taking a multi melta. Or for taking weapons upgrades over an additional body. But like I said, I don't want to be uber competitive, just semi. And realities themed. I like the salamanders. And I get quite a lot from their chapter tactics even at this point level.

Let me know what you think though.

If you want salamanders i would go 2 combi flamer and 2 combi melta. +1 body and put a power weapon on the sgt for cc.

How about this -

Sternguard x5
Vet Sgt. Melta bombs. Master crafted bolter.
Vet. Heavy flamer. Feel no pain.
Vet. Combi melta. Preferred enemy.
Vet. Bolter
Vet. Bolter

Attack bike. Multi Melta. Ignores cover.

I’ve been thinking myself about killteam, but haven’t played a game of it yet. But one big question in regard to flamers: Without squad coherency rules, how many guys are you likely to fit under the template?

You're right, you're not likely to get a great deal under the template. But wait you do get is an auto hit and it ignores cover. Both of which are very useful. With salamanders you also get to re roll the to wound roll. So, I'm guaranteed to hit. I'm very likely to wound. I ignore cover. All they have is an armour save.

Plus for me personally - it's themed.

Your still losing the benefits of your sternguard with that heavy flamer. They can already ignore cover with dragonfire rounds and can more easily adapt to a variety of targets with their bolter or a combi weapon

Agreed. But it is salamanders fluffy. And in range it is also an auto hit at strength 5. In kill team it could also melt vehicles. Especially with re rolling armour pens...

If you want to keep it fluffy go with a combi flamer. And realistically, how many vehicles will you face in KT matches? Sternguard have str6 weapons all by themselves for vehicles, krak grenades.

Flamers can actually be pretty useful, especially with lots of terrain. Everyone tends to head for cover and this clumps them up. A flamer template is not that small. But yes, combo-flamer may prove more useful. You're paying for special issue ammo.

My $0.02, which since 1992 has rounded to nothing. Take with salt.

Why not just take a bunch of marines with combi flamers? The flamers are their if they clump together, and for over watch. Use normal bolter the rest of the time.

Ok, I've settled on the models, I know the list I'm going to take. I need help with specialists now.

I have:

Vet Sgt with melta bombs. Master crafted bolter (Thanks to salamanders chapter tactics)
Vet with heavy flamer - not sure on specialty. Thinking FnP
Vet with Meltagun - ignores cover
Vet with combi melta - preferred enemy
