I am looking at buying the Minitaire paint line but what is stopping me is some of the reviews on Amazon.

Most people are saying the paint dries glossy and after applying a matte coat it really does not correct the issue.

Can you please share your thoughts about this if you are using this line of airbrush paint?

I have indeed found that some of them do dry glossy, biggest issue I had was with the red, tbh though I haven't had much if any issues with a lot of the line, only 2 colours or so.

I would suggest if the vallejo line has the colour you're looking for, go with them, as they're solid all around. Having said that though Minitaire has a lot of great colours that can't be found in the Vallejo line, just watch out for the red

I bought 4 minitaires when I last got paint just to test it out, only used the black so far and it is very glossy, Vallejo satin varnish did tone it down though.

It was only a small area, I just did a ton more black and will know how bad it is later

It has been kind of glossy. Maybe... satin is a better term? It's kind of a moot drawback for me since I dip a large portion of my models because imo most things enjoy a good dirty blackwash and the polyurethane (think that's what it is) is really tough. I have noticed that some of my guys are still shinier than I'd like after I spray them with the Minitaire flat coat, but that could be that the flat coat itself is glossier than I want. Going to experiment with a Krylon clear flat coat reasonably soon to see if I can get a different result.

Overall, I really like the paint set. The bottles are bigger than I was used to with vallejo, drop almost as conveniently, and it's just really nice to finally have a full set of paints. They're a great consistency (on average) for brush painting too, which is what I've been using them for primarily. Some of them may appreciate being thinned before spraying but that point I leave up to the experts, I mostly only use my AB for basecoats and buildings and stuff.

I'll spoiler some of my recent doings with the paints and maybe that will give you something to compare with. Realize that almost everything I'll link has been dipped so it's gloss on top of gloss.



So some things have turned out a bit glossy, some things not as much. Hope this has been helpful.

I like my minitaire set, great value for money and a nice consistent range of vibrant colours. I tend to go to my VMA paints first still though, having only done a few units in full minitaire paint.

The minitaire varnishes are all glossy though, even the matte one is glossy so I use my Vallejo varnishes still. The transparent paints can be really useful for some things too so it's nice to get a good range of them with the set. The metallics... I'm really not a fan of though, I haven't found them competitive with VMA at all.

The only paints ive used that dried glossy have been the flesh tones. The reds, greens, yellows and blues have all dried to a flat finish. I have only used maybe 10% of the total line but I definitely wouldn't say that theyre glossy across the board. I love the set, I switched from a mostly gw set up and havent looked back

However, I absolutely love their ghost tints and I would highly recommend them.

How are you using the ghost tints? I've used them as glaze/washes but not tried straight up spraying something that's been preshaded.

I put them over metallics to create a candy-apple effect. They work great for that.

I would also say they are closer to a "satin" finish than glossy,but that is more a subjective scale.

The paints are awesome.

I would always suggest finishing models with a varnish of some kind (matte, satin or glossy, depending on the look you want) it adds a lot of uniformity to a mini, and helps with decals, washes etc.
