In the space marine dex under Drop pod assault it specifically states that all drop pods and units embarked upon them MUST start the game in reserve. The rule book however states that only up to a maximum of half your army can be deployed in reserve. Which one takes precedence? Does a drop pod army all start in reserve. Or will I be forced to leave empty drop pods in reserve and deploy the troops?

Any help AND references would be appreciated.

Drop pod assault takes precedence. I run a list with five drop pods and the majority of my force embarked on them.

As I understand, the reserve bit in the BRB is focusing on units that do not *HAVE* to start in reserve such as a tactical squad in a rhino etc.

The important part is in the BRB on reserves:

Units that must start the game in reserve are ignored for the purposes of working out how many other units may do so

So you could have 5 drop pods and two rhinos. You ignore the drop pods for working out reserves. You're allowed 50% reserves so you can keep one rhino off the table and start the game with only one on the board

Units that must start the game in reserve do not count towards this limit. 'Preparing Reserves' page 124 in the rulebook.

Also in the rulebook FAQ page 10:
Q: Do units that are transported in a vehicle that MUST start in
reserve count towards the number of units that can be placed in
Reserves? For example, must I count the units in a Drop Pod or
Valkyrie towards the 50% of units I can place in Reserves?
(p124)
A: No.
