Subject: chaos vs eldar 2k highlander - tactics & list tweaks!
|

tonight I have a game against eldar, using my chaos SM. it's a highlander game so there'll be no waveserpent spam to deal with. there's small chance of him bringing a seer council as he only brings it to competitive games.
in case you don't know, a highlander game is one where you can only take one of each unit - there can be only one!
my list is typhus with 4 termies in a landraider, a flying prince of slaanesh with the black mace and mastery 3, 34 zombies, 10 nurgle marines with a lascannon manning an icarus behind an aegis, 10 noise marines with sonic loadouts, 2 nurgle oblierators and a lascannon helbrute.
the plan is to sit back and shoot, tactically decide whether to put the termis in the LR or to deepstrike depending on how his anti-tank is. zombies will take an objective & keep it, daemon prince will throw out magic to buff the noise marines and terminators, typhus will hopefully knock a toughness off the wraithknight and make it susceptible to S4. 7 lascannons, 3 of which are twin linked, should see to the tanks nicely. there's a rhino that's mostly for getting in the way of his tactics, it'll not be carrying anyone but could be there in case someone needs a lift.
the game is a custom one, with D3+2 objectives with some new mysterious objective rules. at the start of the game we roll a die to see what's scoring (as well as troops);
1: just troops are scoring, as normal
2: HQ's are scoring and worth an extra point if killed
3: elites are scoring and worth an extra point if killed
4: Fast attack's are scoring and worth an extra point if killed
5: Heavy Supports are scoring and worth an extra point if killed
6: all units are scoring are scoring and worth an extra point if killed (even troops)
If I had a heldrake I'd have already put it in the list, so please don't suggest one (my wallet cannae take another beating!)
so what do people think of the list? it seems abysmally small to me, but i usually use ork speed freeks and go for target saturation. should I spend less on HQ's? I feel spending over 500 points on 2 models is excessive but they will eat through a lot of enemy...

Albeit expensive, your HQ's are solid. A slannesh prince with the mace running psychic insanity will massacre anything it touches. Be aware that eldar have hatred against your prince, but will take fear tests at -1Ld, so probably worth it as you roflstomp down the squad. Give the prince a spell familiar, as Ml3 means your throwing out a LOT of powers and you don't want to perils. I assume you have armor as well? It is usually worth it to throw in a gift as well, as some of the rolls make your prince godlike. Your already going big, might as well go bigger or go home.
Make sure your terminators have a combi something. Flamers for general eldar, melta for AT/wraiths, plasma for wraithguard. Flamers are probably your best bet.
I would take plague marines over nurgle marines, seven in a rhino with 2 plasma guns. Plague knives will do a number against wraithknights and most else. They are still vulnerable to shuriken, but less so with FNP and blight grenades to stealth them at close range.
Let your noise marines man the lascannon. I assume your taking 2 blastmasters, and those+lascannon will help take out any armor or heavy troops. Not sure if everybody needs sonic blasters, but they are great against any eldar on foot. A doom siren(again, you might have it) will assure nothing can assault you or drop in too close. I strongly suggest an icon of excess, as most eldar S6 won't double you out, and lances are wasted on noise marines, so with the line they will be hard to shift. Unless you see a nightspinner or support batteries, there will also be no barrage to snipe it out.
The lascannon hellbrute is an easy target for S6 spam, any lances and the knight. I would probably take havocs instead for more dakka or lascannons, if that is your thing.
The land raider will be hit or miss. If your up against sufficient bright lance or a seer council, it is dead. The wraithknight will also be a problem, as will be fire prisms, or fire dragons. However, if you can stop these threats or there are not many, you may be in luck. I would probably avoid it for something else. Maybe bikes or spawn.

There's a spell familiar & armour on the prince, forgot to mention that. there's a combi melta & combi flamer in the termies too. only one blastmaster as it's one per ten, and there's only ten models. I'd forgotten plague marines are troops with typhus, might swap them out... had planned on using the lascannon squad with the icarus so it can fire 2 lascannons, seeming less wasteful of the bolters. I think if i'm upgrading my noise marines with sonic weapons, having them fire an icarus would be a huge waste.
I'll see what amount of plague marines i can fit in to replace the nurgle marines, possibly dropping the helbrute to make them a decent unit.

The Errata/FAQ for noise marines allows 2 blastmasters once you hit 10 models.
You don't always have to use the icarus, but it will mesh well with blastmasters. Could be a waste shooting it if you need to mow down a squad with sonic weapons. You could always have havoks on the gun to mesh better.
7 plague marines+2 plas+rhino is only a bit more than 10 nurgle CSM+las+rhino, so you could probably just shuffle some points around.
