Subject: 2 general KoW questions and 2 list specific questions.
Looking at the free rules Kings of War looks like fun. However as a newb I have questions.
1) is 1500 points too large of a starting point or does it really play so smoothly I can start with a largeish army?
2) Each solid unit adds for 1 hero slot and 1 warmachine or monster slot not 1 hero, warmachine or monster slot correct?
3) For giggles I made a 1500 point list centered around orks with some Abbysal Dwarf support. To build this list I would also use some beastmen models and WHFB savage orcs with mixed weapons. Will this cause any confusion?
The list:
Spoiler:
Abyssal Dwarves
Lesser Obsidian Golems troop 90 Solid
Ba'su'su the Vile 190 Monster
Gargoyles half regiment 90
Orcs
Official
Ax Krudregiment, Banner, Musician 125 Solid
Greatax Regiment, Banner, Musician 130 Solid
Gore Riders Regiment, Banner, Musician 200 Solid
Troll Troop 120
Gore Chariot 55
Savage orcs
Morax Troop, Musician 125
Krudger, Mace of Crushing 125 Hero
Beastmen
Ax Troop, Brew of Haste 90
Krudger, Blades of Slashing 125 Hero
Flagger, Fire Oil 35 Hero
4) How would you use this list?
I think the Golems, Trolls, Gore Riders, Ax Krudregiment and Greataxes would make good anvils. I would use the Gargoyles, Ax Troop, Morax and chariot as flanking units and Ba'su'su, and Krudgers go for warmachines and targets of opportunity. Finally the Flagger would join Ba'su'su and Krudgers or strip off Regeneration. Any obvious problems, wastes, and/or missuses?

1. I started with 1500, first games were 2 hours. Now I play 2000-2500 and because of all the players familiarity with the rules we do 2 hours or less with those huge games.
2. it's one solid unit = 1 war engine available, and, either 1 hero or monster available. so yes that 20 man regiment you can take a cannon. and you can then also have a hero OR a monster. so for goblins: Sharpstick Regiment plus Catapult plus Giant. or Sharpstick Regiment plus Catapult plus Wiz.
3. as long as your opponent clearly knows what's up! I also used Beastmen with Orc profiles (as well as Orcs with Orc profiles)
4. any De 5+ is your Anvil, so honestly, not the Greatax.
also I'd take Trolls individually and use them as screening units; more units for your enemy to deal with and each troll has it's own Regeneration.
Kings of War is all about attacking in depth. Either bait the enemy with screening units so they charge/destroy your screening units, then you countercharge with your badass units that were behind the screening units. Or if you're fast, two lines of badass units. It's amazing the tactics you'll develop that differ from many other wargames out there.
