So until recently, I was playing the Hobbit strategy battle game, but due to lack of players and support for the game, I am making the switch to Warhammer 40k. I'm not all that familiar with the concepts behind the game other than understanding other GW games. I do have a group of friends I will be playing with this Sunday to get a feel for the game. That being said, I feel like quite the noob and would love to here any advice for starting the hobby. Thanks.

Welcome!! My advice would be to take your time and do research on all the armies until you find one you like. If you plan on building and painting a full army, which is a blast, its going to take a lot of time and effort so make sure you find an army you enjoy. After that i would come.up with some goal lists you would like to build towards and go from there!
If you have the moneh buying big lots can save you a lot, but if you are building uo slowly, i like the strategy of buying a unit, and then befote buying something else paint what you just bought. That way you end up with a fully painted army in the end!

I always press dat, if you know what I mean.

If you have a friendly group, you can always jut start playing with a battleforce box to start with. No need to agonize on the best list etc. It does save you some money.

Welcome to DakkaDakka, yeah Milkboy's advice is best, it gives you a basic army to use but some don't have HQ units in. But majority do have one in so should be fine

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. It is appreciated. I've been trying to do my research. Does anyone have any links they think would be helpful for deciding which army I play? I know a majority are going to recommend space marines for a new player, but I'm really interested in Tyranids. I love the Starship Troopers feel.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

IceAngel wrote:I must say Knightley, I am very envious of your squiggle ability. I mean, if squiggles were a tactical squad, you'd be the sergeant. If squiggles were an HQ, you'd be the special character. If squiggles were a way of life, you'd be Doctor Phil...

Well, if you want an overview (which I also find funny)I have pasted thelinks below.

If you aren't familiar with the backstory, it's quite a humorous read. And the second link gives you an idea of which units you might want to buy.
