What faction in Bolt Action can run vehicles [tanks and IFVs] the most effectively? I'm interested in Waffen SS but I'm not sure if they use many vehicles.

Vehicles aren't that heavily used in BA all that much currently, there is a supplement book coming out later this year. You could go with a list using lots of transports such as the hanomag for the Germans or the M5 half track for the Americans.
If there's anything else you want to know with regards to different armies let me know.

How well do aircraft need to be represented on the table? I'm torn between using 1/48 and 1/72. 1/48 would more correctly match the scale (avoiding the chunkier nature of the figures, and just going on height) but is much larger and more difficult to transport. 1/72 would be easier to transport, but does not match the scale correctly (to small, however it is the size of the 'official' models).

Also, is the US limited to the P-51 and P-47? I've thought of picking up a P-38 as I love the plane, and dive bombing is one of it's specified roles. My US army book has not arrived yet, so I am unsure of which I want to pick up.

Aircraft don't play a big roll in Bolt action to be honest. Mostly you can pay for a unit called a forward air observer who can call in a single air strike per game (Americans can call in 2 because of one of their special rules) Warlord have released some unofficial rules for using Aircraft more often. You can find them here http://www.warlordgames.com/rules-warplanes-in-bolt-action/ in that page there's only 3 different planes for the USA but if you wanted you and your opponent could agree on using the other allied planes!

Thanks very much! I will probably pick up a P-38 and use it as a counts as for now. It feels fluffier for Airborne to be calling one in or using it as support vs tanks.

No Problem! I haven't had the chance to use the armored platoon yet. My group does bolt action in 15mm so fortunately the tanks should be cheap enough for the group to get some armored platoons. One of the group insists I can 'try' to take on his germans with a t-34 platoon and I haven't taken him up the challenge yet. He has an uncanny ability panzerfaust and panzerschreck my tanks easily..
