With the dawn of the Unbound armies, a friend and I have been playing around with the idea of a fully mechanized Freebooters Fleet, comprised solely of Landships which look like pirate ships, filled with piratey orks.
We only have one problem: We need a flagship. The Spartan isn't big enough. Are there any third party sites which make gargantuan tanks which we could convert? Or would the Gorgon do the trick?

Thanks, everyone. If anyone has ideas for the army I'd love to hear them. We would like the planning phase to be as comprehensive as possible.

There are two issues here;
- what will it count-as rules-wise? A standard Apocalypse or IA vehicle? Or will you make up your own rules?
- then how will you model it? Using Forgeworld models seems terribly expensive, especially as you're presumably planning on heavy converting for the pirate ship look.

Personally I'd be looking at the various Baneblade variants - one of those should be a good start both rules-wise and as a model.

Or another option would be for the flagship to be a 'land train' of smaller vehicles (e.g. Land raiders?) either simply moving in convoy or literally linked together.

Use a modern 1/6 scale vehicle and Loot(tm) it.

This is my only completed landship (this is built on top of a stock ork trukk). i started construction on one on a battlewagon to act as my flag ship for normal tourneys (counting as a BW still) ... not anywhere big enough but.. hopefully illustrates my point about adding height and not footprint

for apoc shenanigans you could really make something much more larger like using a bane blade as a base or something, but that's so damn expensive. Better off using a 3rd party huge tank like you are thinking....

You could always use more than 1 spartan/land raider and join them together?

You could always build up instead of enlarging your foot print?

like how these guys and others have made these huge imperial guard fortresses on tank track things... seen much larger than this but easiest one to find on google

best of luck, be sure to post it up here if you make one! (also keep an eye out for broken ass derelict land raider auctions or friends at FLGS who has em for sale. should be able to get one for 35 bucks or less)

Thanks for reminding me about the derelict land raiders. Broken ass rhinos could be schooners of the feet (looted wagons) and the land raiders could be the ships of the line, so to speak (battlewagons). And yeah, I was originally thinking of making a custom Leviathan (that huge mobile fortress in the picture), but that would not only be more expensive than a forgeworld tank but it would also be a pain in the ass to assemble.

As far as the rules for the flagship.... maybe counts-as an ork vehicle from FW? They have some nasty huge tanks there, although I'm not sure how up-to-date those rules are.

If I made a flagship I'd take a look at the opening of the video game Space Marine for some inspiration. YOu start off wrecking the Warbosses cruzah

Yeah, that would be awesome! Maybe I should just get a 1/6 scale model tank and a bunch of scenery. That would be hilarious.

EDIT: I'm joking, of course. I don't really want to sink 2000 dollars into this. It would be magnificent, though.
Looking through ebay, a 1/16th scale model might actually be perfect. A 2 foot long landship would make a good platform, although I'm not aware of any models which have rules to match such a massive vehicle.

You could go with this: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer/THE-EMPIRE/EMPIRE-MARIENBURG-CLASS-LAND-SHIP.html and orkify it up.

Its dear, but it IS a land ship, and it doesnt look like it would take too much to Orkify, but imagine that, tracked maybe at the front, and then two giant Jet engines/Podracer-style engines on the sides...

cheers
