What is this exactly and what is Battle-forged and should it be something I should be concerned with as a new player?

Unbound is something no one should be concerned about mainly because about 90% of the community is going to reject it and your never going to play it.

It's likely you will, as there's a new edition imminent. IME (this'll be the third edition change I'll have been playing through in 20+ years) they likely won't change any of the big stuff, rolls to hit, wound etc will likely stay untouched.

The stuff to look out for is the subtle stuff that won't jump out and grab you as different, or is easily confused with previous incarnations, eg Furious Charge conveyed +1S AND +1I in 5th, but only +1S in 6th. That's a pretty big one because that made an impact on several armies/units, but it's a good example of something small, possibly easy to miss, that can make a huge difference.

Having no direct information on this, how can you be sure it'll be a new edition and not just an update of certain things? Not trying to say you don't know what you're saying, but 6th hasn't been around that long and rushing right into 7th doesn't really make sense from a gaming development position

WD leaked images already proved it will be 7th.

It is not any less an update than 4th, 5th and 6th were updates. All were "backwards compatible" and retained the basic core rules (unlike the 2nd to 3rd change).

Technically, they could also be considered "updates" on these grounds.

In practice, people have taken to calling them as "new" editions with full numbers (note that "6th Edition" isn't called 6th Edition by GW. If you wanna call it Edition 5.5., go ahead).
