So, I got the box set and fell in love with the game. Same day, I got a 2nd X-Wing and Vader's TIE Advanced.
I don't expect to play competitive, since not many people here play it- just casual games with friends.
What should I buy next?
I figured getting a Lambda-class shuttle and a Y-Wing would be fun. Something big and something for killing big things... but I'm open to advice.
Which ships do y'all think are just fun to play with?

Another core box, a tie expansion pack, an a-wing, a bomber, a falcon, an interceptor, a firespray, a bwing, a y wing, a shuttle, a hwk in that order would be my suggestion -

Given availability, what you can get. I would go for another core set first, the one of everything. There are no bad ships and if you are not playing competitively one of each gives you the most choices.

If you are supplying all the models for everyone to play then i would defiantly recommend:
The second starter set will give you 3 discounted ships (to 3 x-wings and 4 ties) plus all the extra bits and templates for free, plus a second set of dice which is very useful; there are many instances where you will be rolling 4 or even 5 dice at a time.
A Tie fighter expansion will bring you up to 5 Ties, letting you play more of swarm style which is very fun, and gives you the 3 unique named pilots that come with it, most important being Howlrunner who is the key to Tie swarm lists.
The Millennium Falcon is a very cool ship that is easy to use and plays very differently compared to the smaller ships. It also let's you easily show a new player the game's rules. Play a 50 point game with them controlling a Chewie falcon with a gunner vs you using 3 Ties (howlrunner, backstabber and a basic academy pilot). It will display almost all of the game's rules on the fly while playing, and the new player will only have to worry about not flying the Falcon off the table.
Of the other small ships, I'd recommend the Y-wing first to give some easy-to-use variety to the Rebel side

Anything you think looks cool.If your not playing competitively then its mostly decided by what you like to look at when you play and what ships interest you in the movies and EU. Its all personnel interest.

I'm in the same situation, but my son has just begun playing, and he wants to be the good guys. I've got an X-wing on the good guy side, and 4 TIEs, a Tie Interceptor and 2 Bombers on the dark side. What rebels should I add for fun and flavorful battles?

Get the X-Wing pack. It'll add a lot of options for you.
I got the B-Wing and A-Wing. I like the B a lot. A isn't bad, but I'm also playing against a shuttle, and Marksman+Advanced Protons makes for a lot of hurt.

That is great advice. Due to Barnes and Nobles availability, a gift card, and young Skywalker's desires, we ended up adding a B-Wing and E-Wing to the mix. Expensive ships seem like the best choice for him- I've found his attention can't be split between more than 3 ships at a time so far.
At some point we will definitely add in an X-Wing expansion and a Y-wing. I'm still up in the air about the Falcon- I feel as if access to a drifting turret will impede his developing pilot skills.

wait you got an e-wing, I haven't seen them out yet?
B-wings are he power players on the rebel side. But I second/third recommend a second box set.
Also right now miniaturemarket.com has a clearance sale going and they had the hawk and tie bombers at 1/2 price brought Friday.

Ah, my apologies for the confusion- we ordered the B-Wing, the E-wing is on preorder.
Sounds like a great deal on TIE Bombers!
