Was just wondering before I but the codex if guardian gun line lists are viable. Behind a aegis lots of weapon platforms and some warpspiders to distract and harass the advancing army. Some jetbikes in reserves to grab objectives late game. So... thoughts?

Definitely viable, perhaps consider an avatar for fearless.

IG/AM would do a similar list much better though. Flexibility into MSU and orders for example.

Might want to hang on a few weeks for 7th before making significant investments.

^^ This, 7th ed could make a big mess of any plans you have now.

7th? But its only been 2 years since the start of 6th. I thought it was a 4 year cycle. And as fantasy are probably getting 9th edition this summer...

7th will be released on May 24th. It's confirmed by White Dwarf.
for 6th though, 20 man guardian blobs, Avatar for fearless, Vaul's Wrath batteries with Shadow Weavers. Throw in Warlock support for conceal behind the aegis. Since you're going gunline, throwing in things like War-walkers for volume of fire is a good idea. Possible Farseer Support also.

Base 1000 pt list:
Spoiler:
Aegis, Icarus Lascannon
Avatar, Fast Shot, Night Vision (To shoot the lascannon twice at BS10)
20 Guardians, 2 Scatter Lasers/Bright Lances, Warlock
20 Guardians, 2 Scatter Lasers/Bright Lances, Warlock
3 Jetbikes
3 Jetbikes
3 Vaul's Wrath Support Batteries, Shadow Weavers
997 pts.

This would be the core build of the army. From here you add on whatever you'll need to deal with your opponents. More Bright lances for Armour-heavy lists, more Scatter Lasers for mob heavy lists, Starcannons for Monstrous creatures.

I ran 4 teams of 10 and Warlocks with Khaine and two teams of fire dragons in 6th ed pre-codex when our vehicle were worhtless. It was rather effective, but the real trick behind it was to rush the opponent, not hide. Get in their face with all those shots and watch them melt, Khaine and Dragons smash tanks, Battle focus lets you get their in time. Haven't tried it in the new addition yet, but I figure it's only gotten better.

School's out, the War Machine rolls once more
