Well i've loved the WH40k series for a few years, it started with the lore, then the video games, now i'm playing an Only war game, and about to start either a Dark Heresy or a Black Crusade game. But now i was thinking about starting to get into the tabletop. It looks interesting, but the whole measuring and copious amounts of dice, and painting is rather intimidating. I would enjoy being an ork player, even though it seems their codex hasn't been updated for a few editions. If not i'd either go guard or nurglite.

Firstly, Welcome.

I will warn you in advance that the hobby is A) Expensive B) Addictive and C) Time Consuming.

If you are okay with all of these things, (or even if not but just can't help yourself) then continue!

Painting is only intimidating if you try and get your models to a standard that you see in the books or in galleries. Don't. Don't worry about it. Paint at your own pace and the more you paint, the better you will get.

I am going to let you know that Orks are an army that requires a LOT of painting and a LOT of models to play effectively, but once you have your entire ork army assembled (Which will take a long time) you will find it one of the most rewarding things to do.

The game itself is why I play, but I try to paint as and when I can. my painting isn't that great.

Anyway, There is a new codex coming VERY soon a long with a new starter set that is likely to contain ORKS and Blood Angels! Including the new rule book, dice, blast templates etc.

Keep your eye out for that one.

Well i knew about the expenses and the time, but just watching the games looks pretty entertaining. I was looking at the GW ork battle force or starting force or whatever it's called, the $110 with all the boyz the bikes and the battle wagon and codex, is that worth it or should i just buy something else? i wanted a cheap 100 dollar (or about 100) starting force to begin with. and perhaps a few people to play against to...

Hello!

A good starting force usually consist of 2 Troops and a HQ. that could change with the next edition though. Even so, it's a good place to start. I would get the battleforce as a add on, instead of beginning. Ebay is a great place to find some cheap Boyz, but if you'd rather support you local gaming store, I would still get a 3 boxes of Boyz to start out with...

I might also suggest checking out online retailers (www.miniaturemarket.com) if you are new to the hobby. Utilizing their 20% off price point for Games Workshop products is a wonderful thing when you are a new comer to the game.

Additionally I would also like to suggest getting a feel for your gaming community. 40k, like many other games, has its try-hards and its fluff-bunnies. It would be advantageous to attempt to identify your local group early on so that you can ensure you will be having the maximum amount of fun. I personally am very picky with who I game with but the handful of guys I've met who enjoy playing the same way I play have made my experience much more enjoyable.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
