I'm looking to get a dremel for drilling out my space marine gun barrels.... is 15000-30000 RPM safe to use on GW plastic models

Don't do it! The plastic will melt due to the high rpm. Do it in your own

It's safe but, I would go slow or buy a mini hand drill. Dremels might be a bit to fast /high torque for the job.

A standard Dremel will destroy something as fiddly as a marine bolter.

Get a hand drill or pin vice and do it manually, it is much easier than using a Dremel.

Listen to the advice given, get yourself a hand drill, they usually comes with variety of drill bits to your needs.

Ok, thanks guys. That's what I thought anyway but the tool in question was cheap and had reviews saying it was good for plastic, but I care too much about my marines to risk that, hand drill it is.

Yeah mate, you will get good use out of a hand drill . Grab yourself a bunch of different sizes of drill bits too.

I bought a cheap 10.8v cordless drill - still too fast for bolter barrels

I still use it for them though

As stated: DONT USE A DREMEL ON PLASTIC!!

Pin vices are the tool for the job or a Tamiya Hobby Drill if you have allot to do - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tamiya-74041-Electric-Handy-Drill/dp/B000J46WZ4

It's a nice little model kit in itself but it is a true king of hobby tools. Its the sole reason I have magnetised my FoW stuff as it makes doing allot of small diameter accurate holes easy.

I agree with the rest about using a Dremel. Just don't do it.

Hand drills will work just fine but make sure it has variable speeds. That means you control the speed of the drill rather than the drill going on or off at full speed(like a Dremel).

Good luck

Also, get yourself a steel scribe. You use it to make a small pilot hole, which will not only be more accurate, but will make the rest of the drilling easier.
