Hey ya'll,
Noremac here, yet again! This time I had a question about the new army I'm starting, Grey Knights. Now I have read all the fluff present in the newest Grey Knight codex many times and have tried to search other places for it, but it makes me a bit worried. My understanding is that the Grey Knights only have 8 Brotherhoods, each 100 men strong, but I also read in the codex that the whole 800 men army is more figurative and that in reality they have closer to 5,000 men. So, here is what I am trying to accomplish! I want to create my own Brotherhood with custom special characters. I have an idea that an Inquisitor took this Brotherhood under his control to help him in his campaign around the universe. So how unrealistic is this? Would people accept the fact that I have created my own Brotherhood that is led by an Inquisitor? (There will still be a Brotherhood Grandmaster!) Also, I myself HATE the Silver Knights look and I want them to be colored. I haven't determined it yet, but I thought maybe they could have painted their armor as the color of the Brotherhood Grandmaster's heraldry.

So Dakkalites,
How crazy is all this?

I like the idea. I haven't personally read it yet, but the old codex for Grey Knights I believe said there were a lot more than a standard chapter size worth.

Here's something you could do for it.

There was a huge threat around the Eye of Terra somewhere, and the Grey Knights assigned a full brotherhood to the task of handling it, putting them under the control of Inquisitor <Noremac>

While they were there, the threat spread throughout the galaxy, or the threat was eventually handled but the primary daemon that caused the threat continues to pop up around the galaxy.

The Brotherhood and the Inquisitor are now tasked with handling this daemon or threat.

Because this brotherhood continues to fight in site of imperials, they didn't want to have to mindwipe/kill all those that are exposed. Because of this, they instead choose a different color, and go by the name of Chapter <Noremac>, so everyone who sees them simply believe they're another space marine chapter. Maybe even taking over the identity of a deceased space marine chapter, using their colors, and home world, fortress, and recruiting grounds.

This allows you to also ally with Space Marines, and say they are from your brotherhood, but are those that are 'new' recruits that haven't been or won't be transformed into the Grey Knights, and fight battles that aren't directly involved with the daemon threat so the GK's can.

While usually I'd run to the "The Codex Astartes Anti Daemonica does not support this action", I'm gonna take a different approach.

Go for it.

Look, Ward naffed up our book, alright? He murdered the fluff (as well as a bunch of sisters), skewed the power level to over 9000, and made everyone hate us. So, basically, if what you've got going is well thought out, fits the rest of the fluff well (so, y'know, no "We're all Primarch level just 'cause" kinda gak... cool stuff, which it sounds like you have), then yeah. No problem with running them in another colour. A friend of mine ran his in a red and black sceme that, frankly, made the Chrome Knights pale (not literally, mind) in comparison.

TL;DR version: Go for it, because Ward fethed up our book so bad it's unlikely you'll do any harm. Rule of cool.

@invisiblade,
Thank you so much! Honestly, you took the idea in my head and made it around 100 times better! I can't wait to write up some fluff for my new Brotherhood/Chapter thingy.

@liquidjoshi,
I completely agree,
I have read bits of fluff from the old GK codex and things seemed a lot nicer. Our Holy Liege really did naff up our codex. And in fact, the reason I didn't start a GK army sooner was because they were incredibly OP... Up until that damn book of fishes. (Cough, cough... Tau...)

Other than the fact that the Imperium doesn't leave the confines of the Milky Way galaxy, it sounds fine. An Ordo Malleus Lord Inquisitor would have the pull to have a Brotherhood seconded to his retinue on a permanent basis.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Er... I didn't realize the Imperium of Man was stuck in the Milky Way. I know they are the predominant power in the Milky Way, but I thought they expanded beyond that... Could be wrong (Probably am, wrong.)

It's all in the rolls.

Well, we don't know that they are, but it is a hard sell. Easier to stick in the Milky Way if possible.

If they can't see the astronomicon (light of the emporer), they can't navigate the warp. Since it doesn't reach even to the far eastern side of the galaxy... I would say unless there's a galaxy direct to the west, then they're stuck in the Milky way.

Course, they could get lost in the warp and appear in any galaxy, and be separated from the imperium for forever...

I see. Looks like I need to brush up on my fluff then. I'm very very rusty. But anyways, thanks for all your help guys! I'll post the finished fluff when it is done. I plan on making a pretty lengthy piece of fluff for my army. That way, if my opponent objects I can hand them a leatherbound novel Haha.

Plus,
40k is a million times better when it is narrative and has fluff. Makes the lack of balance a bit less noticeable.

Of course There is a point to the whole "forge a narrative", problem is that people generally see it as GW handwaving bad game design. While on GW's end it pretty much is, the rest of us can have fun with it

Good luck.
