In C:GK (the army I'm used to), a Paladin has to lose his ranged weapon to take a Narthecium. I do not see this stipulation on p164 of the SM book. Am I missing something from some other page, or can the Command Squad Apothecary both shoot and provide FNP?

Yaaay! We get to do this again!
The answer is that it depends on how you read the rule. Some people say yes. Some say no. Pretty much both sides will tell you that only they are right according to RAW (at least here on Dakka) and that if you do it otherwise, you're cheating.

So I didn't miss any text, it's just perhaps the model itself has replaced its bolter/whatever with the Narthecium? Or something like that?

Oh, never mind, I thought you were asking a different question. No, the apothecary doesn't have to replace his ranged weapon with the narthecium. That's never required. (The SM one doesn't, at any rate.)

Indeed, it just says "One veteran may be upgraded to an Apothecary, taking a Narthecium." Veteran unit profile is changed to Apothecary and Narthecium is added to wargear list.

in the French version the apothecary exchanged his pistol for the narthecium, but it has been changed back to just gaining it.
Also the command squad fluff page (p.88) lists the apothecary's wargear including the pistol.
