Subject: Looking for Praetorian Guard Fan Made Codex?

Well my I found my friend a Tanith Codex and its very cool. He is starting to get a tanith army and well id like to use a codex made for my army. I dislike the latest codex which is completely bland and devoid of anything flavorful (in my opinion) and Id love to find a Fan made one. If not I may have to go back to using that old 3rd/4th edition codex with doctrines etc... Cheers Ok so are these any good? Formations: Close order Formation: +1 I and +1 Ld when in close order formation. Square Formation: If the enemy models have hammer of wrath they lose the ability when charging a square. The Square then gains that Hammer of wrath (and use it that phase as if they charged). They also gain plus 1 S on the first round of combat. Forming a square cannot take models further away from the enemy charging. A square works like deep striking (all bases must be touching) however to form a square. Cannot Overwatch if used. Loose Formation: Count as going to ground against blast weapons (regardless of ordinance). Units must be 2”apart from each other to be in loose formation. Counter Charge Formation: Instead of using overwatch they may form a close order formation and receive the counter attack special rule. Orders: Uses the orders from the Imperial Guard (Astra Militarum codex). When casting the First Rank Second Rank Fire Order, if in close order formation they get to use it in overwatch as well. However cannot benefit from any formations during that combat. Negatives: All infantry units cost 15 points extra for these abilities and all units must take them. No camo gear can be taken. Each platoon must take a platoon standard along with the company command squad. If playing against Orks units must pass a leadership or charge them if possible. (not sure about this one). Not sure if the negatives are balance out with the positives. I mean each units costs 15 points more and there is not camo available. A lot of formations bar one mean you are bunched up and are more useful in combat. I didnt end up with any shooting bonuses because I feel us guard have enough shooting as it is. Otherwise veterans could be shooting with BS5 for example. Let me know what you think.

As far as I know, there's nothing out their for the Preatorians even in terms of fan-made stuff. However, I think you could take a hint from the DKOK lists, and just add a couple of rules to the main book. Here's my suggestions:
Drill, Drill, Drill: if half or more models in a unit are in base contact, the unit may fire at +1 BS. (obvious drawback but also a good bonus, so I'd say it's fair)
As the Gentleman Said: A Praetorian army may re-roll one failed Order test per turn. However, if more than one test is failed in any one turn, no more orders may be issued that turn. (again, a slight bonus, but also a risk)

GW seems to want to forget the Praetorians ever existed with the same passion and fervor they gave the Squats and Rainbow Warriors. Why is unknown.
As for fan content, despite the Praetorians being something of an Ensemble Darkhorse I haven't encountered much in the way of fan content for them.

I was gonna use the close order drill from the old old dex
but With iron discipline the added benefit of 3D6 dice used for one order a turn (for any unit in close order) however a double 6 is still a double six.
This would cost a 15 points per squad and must be purchased for all infantry.
No camo cloaks are allowed in a praetorian force.
I may make a creed style Captain Cain but yea thats what I had written as a back up for now. Does it sound over powered?
As a note, close order drill gives me plus 1 leadership and initiative.

Perhaps making a rule that Plasma weapons are rare or non-existent on Praetoria (since they aren't represented on any of the official models) might be a good idea.
I also like the idea of the Praetorians having disciplined firing ranks. Perhaps that could be represented by having a lower Snap Fire target number. Say, 5+ instead of 6+.
Perhaps squads could pay for the boost in Snap Fire for 10-20 points per squad? Or it could be free but the charged unit strikes at Initiative Step 1 to account for the extra time taken to aim and fire.

Well unfortunately I love plasma, so every officer and special weapon is plasma! Restricting it would mean massive amounts of changes.
The disciplined fire ranks I hoped would be represented buy the order bonus but it isnt much of a bonus really. Maybe Iron discipline can instead be +1 BS once per turn. So it can be during the assault if they are charged, or during a normal shooting phase? But they still need to be in close drill order to use it.
I reckon 15 points per squad (which must be taken). After all blast weapons will have fun with your ranks and with no access to camo it will make things that bit harder.
Does that sound better?

Ha, fair enough! If plasma is already on your models then by all means ignore the plasma idea.

I like the spirit behind this, but I am not a fan of rules that require more book keeping for the player ( 40k has enough of those!), so having to track when I used a special ability during my turn (or my opponent's turn) would be problematic. Still, that is just personal preference on my part and not a criticism of the rule. I might bump it to 20 points (2 pts per trooper in the squad) since BS 4 on a firing line, especially with orders, could be pretty effective.
I just had another idea. What about a Veteran doctrine that gave Counter-Attack and or a boost to WS? Might be cool to have some competent melee available since they are usually charged by thousands of Orks at a time. Perhaps the doctrine came about after lessons learned from the Big Toof Massacre. You could even call it "Veterans of the Ork War" or "Green Skinning Parties" or something suitably hostile to the Orks. 30 points for that doctrine.

Yea 20 points sounds good.
Thats pretty cool too, maybe square formation for veterans?
Before they are charged they can form a defensive square (much like how deep strike works, but with a square) that can not take them further away from the target.
Nit sure what bonus they can get though? Maybe they can ignore hammer of wrath and and get it themselves? Or maybe it grants them the counter attack rule? Or as you say a WS bonus?
I like the idea of formations and orders being a core part of their rules as you can see.

Formations and orders do make sense for a regiment that is so rigidly disciplined.
I'll give this some more thought and if anything useful pops up I'll be sure to throw some more ideas around. I am looking forward to whatever else you come with since a Praetorian fan-dex would be something I'd have fun trying out.

Interesting ideas to be sure. However, I think the 'loose formation' , while nice, might be very difficult to implement, having to check each model's distance.
For the Square formation, I'd suggest just granting +1S (or counter-attack) at the expense of overwatch, again rather than reshuffling all the models which just slows things down.

Square gets +1S on the first turn (as they are made to defend against cav so its sort of a flank-less shock absorbent). Plus the counter formation grants them counter attack. Both are at the expense of overwatch.
I think most of these are a pain to implement but after a turn or so it will become habit to have it roughly have it correct.
