Ok, so I have a home made lightbox, with a plain white background. However in some folks pictures I see...how to best describe this...swirly/splotchy gray backgrounds. Where does one get this stuff? Is it custom painted or maybe found at photography shops? I've never seen poster board like that at the local craft store.

Without seeing an example it is hard to say what you are refering to, but yes...in general, there are background sheets you can buy which have patterns and gradients on them. Some people will print their own as well. You can find a large assortment at photography stores (online or local).
Craft booking sections of stores also carry a lot of paper that is not solid colors (stuff like aged vellums and rice papers for example).

Here is the best place in my opinion for photo advice and expertise!

I use the same set up and the same backgrounds. I printed them out on high quality paper from a photo printer.

In other words, you want your photos to look like a 40K box

If you wanna grab some Pinup miniatures while also getting some nice photo-background you should check out this Kickstarter:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/710406053/modern-pinup-miniatures-bawidamann-style
In which you can get some backgrounds.

Just 3 days to go! They are over their goal, it is a really popular Kickstarter. I went for the mini 6 pack of 32MM figures. It is going to be so much fun to paint these up, I can't wait. Plus the photo backgrounds. It is almost as if this Kickstarter were just for the OP.
