Alright, so they are a splinter group of Thousand sons, that I decided to call the forgotten sons, which will be clear why soon. During the Space Wolves attack on Prospero, when Magnus teleported them to the Planet of Sorcerers a small number of them were lost in the warp, and taken to a daemon planet (obviously due to Tzeentch's power) now simply referred to as Labyrinth by anyone whose had the pleasure of being there. Split up and believing themselves to be the last of their legion, the poor Brothers were becoming slowly aware of the maddening voices beginning to build in their heads, each voice telling them to "reach the core". As they fought daemons and monsters through the planet's ever changing and twisting corridors and hallways, desperately trying to reach the core of the planet throughout the months and weeks as the daemon voices became unbearable and mind-melting.

Eventually some brothers realized that surrendering themselves to Tzeentch would end the voices, but not permanently, some poor sap figured out that only full daemonic possession would end the voices completely. The brothers that did make it to the core found a huge orb and the voices directing them to the orb. The brothers who remained loyal were not as lucky, with eventual insanity and the glory of spawndom being blessed upon them by the changer of ways. After weeks of work (the voices made it hard to do anything really) the sorcerers and librarians devised a plan to open the orb and finally end the damned voices. With the opening of the orb, the voices finally stopped, but the brothers had a new problem on their hand; a huge Bloodthirster that had been imprisoned in the orb, now hungry for revenge for it's centuries of captivity. it decimated their forces, but not before an unnamed veteran sergeant climbed on it's back and crushed it's skull with his lightning claws, with the few remaining psykers using their power to finally kill the monster.

The few remaining brothers included: a 9 tactical marines, 2 sorcerers, 1 assault marine and 5 terminator-armoured veterans, along with the sergeant who killed the daemon, and they all saw him best fit to lead them back out of the warp and home to their legion (of which they had not idea what had happened), all whilst devising plans to hide their worship of Tzeentch, as it seemed their love for him had slowed their mutation and devolution (I know this parts a bit of a grey area, I didn't know what to say about the problem of mutation). whilst on their travel to the surface, they encountered daemonically possessed brothers, who they took with them (they never intended on bringing them back to the chapter, either slaughtering them or releasing them before leaving the warp), many brothers who now took the form of spawn (They learnt what bolt rounds taste like) and also the badly damaged form of an unrecognizable dreadnought brother, felled by bolter rounds and daemonic claws, but the broken pilot somehow still alive, if completely insane and badly suffering from warp mutation. For whatever reason, the brothers pitied him and brought him with them, promising him a new body once they escaped this hellhole.

When they found their way to the surface, they found a fully possessed daemon ship, the crew and serfs replaced by daemons, ready to return them to the Imperium and back to their legion. Unfortunately, the warp is a fickle and strange place when it comes to time; they emerged to watch the horus heresy fall and the traitor legions escape into the warp, the very place where they had been trapped for so long. Upon learning of their legions fall to chaos, they were horrified, but were quick to realise that so had they (they thought that their belief in their willpower had protected them, they now realized they worshipped Tzeentch, just like the rest of their brothers) feeling thoroughly defeated, along with the return of the voices, they returned to labyrinth, where the daemon powers now parted the walls for them, allowing them clear access to the core.

They found the great chamber refitted for their purposes, along with a chaos relic they refer to as the 'well of Tzeentch', a strange pool that points them towards planets and systems and very mild powers to see into the future; they are practically slaves to Tzeentch's whims. The threat of the voices and orders coming from the well, they do the Architect of Fate's bidding, be it purging a planet, fighting another warband, protecting a imperial planet from tyranids, or strangely more recently protecting a single Farsight enclave from attack again and again.

Okay, so i might of put a bit of thought into their background.

They recruit by harboring fleeing refugees of the imperium, either swaying them to Tzeentch or slaughtering them if they disagree. the original Brothers imprisoned on labyrinth are now their aspiring champions and leaders, referred to as 'Oracles of Tzeentch' by the other warriors of the force. Cultists are a rare sight amongst them, as most quickly mutate into spawn, but a few traitor regiments of guardsmen somehow maintain a close to human form and fight alongside the forgotten sons.

They have seemingly been active since almost immediately after the Heresy, and have gained the attention of the Order Chronos, due to the fact that after suffering seemingly devastating losses they will return at full strength, and their perfectly timed attacks and jumps from the eye and the maelstrom has led to some inquisitors believing they have an understanding of the warps time melding ways. The counter-argument is that they are simply guided by Tzeentch, but who truly knows?

I think I would paint their armour in original Thousand sons colours, but with a heavier focus on black to represent their shame at their original legion, and more blues and yellows to show a love for Tzeentch. They like to adorn their armour with trophies (like any good chaos follower), especially with the heads of Space Wolves, who they blame for their legions fall in the first place, and the Thousand sons, after seeing them fall to chaos (cos y'know, they're allowed to fall to chaos but their brothers aren't) and seeing the horrific automatons they became, herded into battle by sorcerers.

They are notorious for working independently, being incredibly sercretive (not alpha legion secretive though; they like bragging about their cool tzeentch imbued stuff) and not allowing outsiders to view their brotherhood unless they intend on joining or taking a fun amount of chainsword to the face afterwards. This is because they see themselves as Tzeentch's chosen who have no time to work with the petty schemes and ambitions of others, only their master's bidding. Might also have something to do with the voices coming back in full force when they do something he doesn't like. So yeah.

I like it, the mutation thing isn't a huge issue just chalk up to Tzeetnch feeling changey again.

I really like the rumors of time manipulation, could be a cool concept (plus gives you a fluffy reason to use MoS just claim those are marines who are able to see slithery ahead in time hence the increased quickness).

Also maybe think about using Codex Crimson Slaughter, could work with some of the stuff you are mentioning (although lock VoTLW kinda hurts)

Excellent backstory. A well thought out bit of lore for your own guys enhances them greatly IMO.

Your back story starts with them surrendering to tzeentch to stop the voices and then they are surprised to realise they have fallen to tzeentch too? The well of Tzeentch is already pretty much a thing, fateweaver was thrown into it and thats where he got all his wacky powers. I'm also fairly sure oracles of tzeentch is already the name of a warband. No oracles of change is the warband, oracle of tzeentch is fateweaver's nickname.

There's also no explanation for how they recruit, you say they take refugees but they have no gene seed reserves or apothecaries.

Where does the belief of their high position in tzeentch's hierarchy come from? They go from being surprised to be traitors to thinking their better then all other traitors without a step in between. The core is refitted for purpose? So what does that mean? it was turned into a fortress monastery or something?

Yeah, thinking back I was wondering where I was thinking up all these cool ideas and now you've pointed out I just copied it all from all of the fateweavers stuff. I think I'll have to rethink them completely. I was on 1d4chan's Chaos warband creator page I liked the idea of a warband still worshiping the emperor, and then I could probably play them as Space Marines or a successor chapter of the named armies. If I don't go with that I'll probably retry with these guys.
